In America, the whole retro thing is based on getting now-affluent baby boomers (men, mostly, born between 1945 and 1965 or so) to buy the car they dreamed of driving in the 1950s, 1960s and, in some cases, 1970s when they couldn't afford it. I have a second home in a retirement area in Arizona and the place is crawling not only with new "retro" models (including lots of PT Cruisers) but also plenty of genuine restored vintage-mobiles. It's actually a great place for the genuine semi-antiques because the dry climate (and absence of snow or road salt) keeps them spotlessly rust-free.
Somehow, I doubt the same generation in Europe experienced the same love affair with cars.
