While I am in love of the idea of privatizing rail in the hopes of getting better service, I am afraid that the terrible state of our systems would lead many companies just believing it's a money pit with a few exceptions (like Chicago to STL, NE Corridor, etc).

Also I don't think anyone would still consider taking a train from DC to Miami. Even in Japan where I'm working now, the trains vs planes debate only make sense up to a certain distance with the Japanese. As long as the trip is but so long via train, theyll take it. Otherwise, due to time savings, they will fly. (like from tip to tip of the country's main islands for example).

True, but if the entire line was high speed, quick journeys on segments like Atlanta to Charlotte, Miami to Charlotte, DC to Raleigh, etc would be possible. Miami to DC might be too far, but other trips could work.

Well played, AAF. By building the large Miami Central Station you effectively jump-started the efforts to get the Tri-rail line going - and once it is running you will have that many more passengers passing through you shopping mall dressed up as a 'central station.' In effect, you prompted government to spend money on a transit project that will benefit you. You will have all the bennefits of a land developer with none of the costs of running the commuter trains. Very well played indeed.

And to think the conspiracy theorists were so focused on new panaMAX freight traffic, when the real prize money will come from tri-rail commuter passengers!

Love Tri-Rail , cant wait for the new MIA airport station
wonder what the anti-AAF people will think of this
MY question is this - AAF is 32 trains (16 south/16 north)
how many more trains for Tri-Rail ??
I think they switch tracks at Pompano.........

With Tri-Rail and AAF sharing a downtown station, has there been any hints at Amtrak wishing to join in? I would imagine a downtown location, with connections to commuter rail and HSR to be pretty attractive. And since they run two lines down to Miami they can just have one switch locations so as to not lose the old (and the new being built) station.

Why can't wait now? I think it's time to open new MIA Airport station. They won't have wait for any much longer.

Fort Lauderdale streetcar project falling off track

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/br...103-story.html

Quote:
Fort Lauderdale is in danger of losing its planned downtown electric streetcar system if officials can't quickly resolve conflicts that have already pushed the project a year behind schedule.

South Florida Regional Transportation Authority officials say the planned streetcars are "in jeopardy of losing federal and ultimately SFRTA support" because of "unmet partner commitments" and "unresolved partner issues."

Groundbreaking Next Week For All Aboard Florida’s West Palm Beach Station

Quote:
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held for All Aboard Florida’s station in West Palm Beach next week.

The 60,000 square foot station will be located in downtown West Palm Beach. It is being designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Miami’s Zyscovich Architects.

Construction is already underway at AAF’s Fort Lauderdale station. Site work has been spotted at the site of AAF’s station in Miami, but no official groundbreaking ceremony has been scheduled yet.

The West Palm Beach groundbreaking will take place on November 12 at 9 A.M.

Thumbs down Motorist killed in crash with Tri-Rail train

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/br...114-story.html

I cannot not believe this. Remember what happened in a few weeks ago and now this. That's not good! He can't be go around the trains tracks. He have stay away from the tracks. He's breaking the law. Cypress Creek station is closed until the further notice. There is 250 passengers is waiting for the trains.

If you right click on the image you should get an option 'copy image URL.' Then paste that in SSP in the proper format:
Example:

Result:

It's a neat graphic. Thanks for finding it.
