This grave is at
Angelus Rosedale Cemetery. The headstone is easier to read if you know what it says, which is:
Charles Volney Howard
Born
Oct 13 1842

Howard, who died in a
shootout with Daniel Nichols (son of ex-LA Mayor John Nichols) in the Lafayette Hotel on Main Street,
was originally
buried in the cemetery on Fort Moore Hill. I don't know when his remains were moved, but here is his original
gravesite in an undated photo. Please also note the brick vault at left:

Robert Carlisle died on July 8, 1865, in a
shootout with brothers Frank and Houston King in the Bella Union Hotel. (Other accounts
of the shootout are
here and
here.) Carlisle, too, was buried at Fort Moore Hill Cemetery, in an above-ground brick vault, which
was later
broken into. Here is an undated photo showing the Carlisle/Carlyle vault, also visible in the Howard grave photo:

That brick vault apparently survived until 1947. I wonder where it was exactly?

Those two vintage photos were obviously taken at different times, but they were taken from almost the same spot. The Carlisle
vault photo was taken from a point slightly to the left of where the Howard grave photo was taken. The Carlisle photo also appears
to have been taken after Howard's remains were moved to Angelus Rosedale. Compare these closeups from the two photos:
Howard
Carlisle
The Carlisle vault photo also appears more recent because the tall headstone in the left rear seems to have a tree hanging
closer to it than in the Howard photo. I'll further guess that both photos face either north or west; if they faced south or east,
we'd be more likely to see buildings in the background, like the Sand St. School or the 1891 LAHS.
