What kind of trees are on the right with the gnarly trunks--------> Pepper?

__
That's the John H. Jones residence in 1888.

Yes, those are pepper trees on the right.

I looked up Cardesty in the city directories without success.

Here's a closer look at the mother with her children. (I suppose that's who it is)

detail

The little girl is hugging a doll, and the boy behind the baby carriage is sporting a magnificently detailed jacket.

Could it be Hardesty?

You were absolutely correct alester.

Although he has a different address in the 1890 directory than on the photo.

Today's Julius Shulman post takes us back to school. It's "Job 2451: Hugh Gibbs, Robert Milikan [sic] High School (Long Beach, Calif.), 1957". Like most of the photosets I'm going through at the moment, there are quite a few images, so I've picked a selection so that I don't overload you with similar views.

A look across an almost empty campus.

The library and a covered walkway.

And here's the inside of the library (I assume).

The gym (seen in an unposted image) and pool have the same ceiling design, so they were probably in the same building.

After the factory shots I've posted recently, it seems odd to see the workshop with no one in it.

Here's another auditorium to add to our collection.

I'll finish with the interior.

All from Getty Research Institute

Robert A. Millikan Senior High School can still be found at 2800 Snowden Ave, Long Beach. I've gone for an aerial "now" view looking east.

Google Maps

The school is named after the physicist Robert Andrews Millikan, who also gave his name to Caltech's Millikan Library which we saw last month.

And he isn't listed in the 1891 directory.
Frank Hardesty is listed in the 'Los Angeles Business Directory 1890-91'. His address is given as 700 W Sixth Street.

I have a question.

Most here know about John and Doria Jones who lived in the adobe facing the Plaza which eventually became the site of the Simpson Jones Building.

But the John H and Carrie Jones (just spoken of as living on the future site of the Rosslyn) previously also lived in an adobe facing the Plaza according to
this, which was later used for the Pasadena Electric Express office serving Henry Huntington's short line out to Pasadena.

Does anyone know which adobe belonged to the latter Joneses? Thx

Fort Moore Hill Cemetery

This grave is at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery. The headstone is easier to read if you know what it says, which is:

Charles Volney Howard
Born
Oct 13 1842
Died
Feb 14 1869

Find a Grave

Howard, who died in a shootout with Daniel Nichols (son of ex-LA Mayor John Nichols) in the Lafayette Hotel on Main Street,
was originally buried in the cemetery on Fort Moore Hill. I don't know when his remains were moved, but here is his original
gravesite in an undated photo. Please also note the brick vault at left:

489564 @ HDL

Robert Carlisle died on July 8, 1865, in a shootout with brothers Frank and Houston King in the Bella Union Hotel. (Other accounts
of the shootout are here and here.) Carlisle, too, was buried at Fort Moore Hill Cemetery, in an above-ground brick vault, which
was later broken into. Here is an undated photo showing the Carlisle/Carlyle vault, also visible in the Howard grave photo:

489553 @ HDL

That brick vault apparently survived until 1947. I wonder where it was exactly?

May 12, 1947, LA Times @ ProQuest via LAPL

Those two vintage photos were obviously taken at different times, but they were taken from almost the same spot. The Carlisle
vault photo was taken from a point slightly to the left of where the Howard grave photo was taken. The Carlisle photo also appears
to have been taken after Howard's remains were moved to Angelus Rosedale. Compare these closeups from the two photos:

Howard

Carlisle

The Carlisle vault photo also appears more recent because the tall headstone in the left rear seems to have a tree hanging
closer to it than in the Howard photo. I'll further guess that both photos face either north or west; if they faced south or east,
we'd be more likely to see buildings in the background, like the Sand St. School or the 1891 LAHS.

There's a 1863 map of the cemetery here, but until one can be located in a larger size, it's pretty useless. Too early for your shootout victims anyway.

Audrey's has been mentioned once before on NLA, but this is the first photograph.

Beaudry mentions in an earlier post that Audrey's was located at Olympic & Avarado.

The auctioneer gives a date of 1961 for that gorgeous William Claxton shot.

The 1956 CD shows the Nardoni Bond and Insurance Agency at 130 N San Pedro Street, with Mack's Dry Cleaners at 130½. That block of N San Pedro has since been renamed Judge John Aiso Street. Looking at Historic Aerials, the buildings in the photo had gone by 1964. The Nardoni Bond and Insurance Agency's main office was at 312 W 1st Street in 1956.

Spot the Oppen's!

Oppen's Market (with the partially obscured Van De Kamp Windmill). One 1936 listing located at 922 W Jefferson (Adjacent to USC). Another at 3504 W. Slauson (1939) and 4123 W. Washington Blvd. None of those addresses seem a perfect fit.

Interesting structures in background. A mix of asian-inspired architecture, and on the horizon (to the right of the pyramid-shaped hill), a vision of the Acropolis, a Ceasar's Palace ad, possibly a caffeine-inspired optical illusion, or mature date palms lining a distant street.

Life

But wait, don't take off your Cat's Paws too soon! Here's another Oppen's near 12th Avenue and Washington Blvd., circa 1932. http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/co...ll170/id/53161

Too much out-of date mayonnaise in the coffee?

Looks like an iceberg or Dover's Cliffs above the SIGNS sign.

Wonder what is nesting in those dead palm fronds? (Someone's missing homework?)

Round the corner, sacred ground?

I found the picture on Terry Guy's Flickr. The caption says:
The Weddington Building

Lau's Coffee Shop, at the corner of Lankershim and Chandler Blvds in the heart of North Hollywood, California. The Hendrick's Builder's Supply building, formerly the Southern Pacific and Pacific Electric station, is visible to the right. Invisible, around the corner was a shoeshine stand.

Scenes for the "Mr. Magic" episode of the 1980's Amazing Stories TV series, with guest star Sid Caesar, were filmed at Lau's.

The building was demolished for construction of the Red Line Subway to North Hollywood. Years after the subway's completion, this building site remains a vacant lot.
It's dated as "Taken sometime in 1986".
