These buildings have been in a very poor shape for much longer than you think. I remember in the mid 90s, befor any redevelopment was in the air, the whole block was even worse than it is today. The Spectrum was maybe opened, but nearby buildings were burnt down and punks were the king of the place. This area never really took off.
As for the restaurant, the building was built somewhere in the 70s ( it doesn't have any great facade behind the aluminium wall).

I respect your opinion, but I think that with the current project, and let's suppose a new bar/lounge/restaurant on the first floor of the renovated Blumenthal building, this part of downtown will be much more interesting and lively than it ever was.

I don't understand the big deal in having new stores with higher cielings and "up to" standards on a stretch that never really took off. Since the early 90s that spot was always delapidated, a reason I believe is the cheap building quality!

As for using the parking behind it, if you have been registered on mtlurb you would know

And the spectrum redeveloppement will not only have a best buy, this will be the main tennant, but im sure other restaurants, cafes and shops will be there, and certainly much better quality of stores than the ones that were there.

Also, sometimes to start on a clean sheet of paper is the best way to revitalise an area, and give confidence to people to go in that area again.

malek, do you have any confirmation that only the spectrum/bleury end of the block will be replaced? if the second cup, dairy queen, shoe store, etc. will still stand, well, i guess that isn't so bad. i was under the impression that the entire block would be razed.

It's going to be a big project nonetheless.
