I'm not sure if that's what they're doing, I can't really tell by looking at the cam. But they do still need to dig down on the site and their permit for tower crane installation is still in review.

Construction starts on 366-room Westin hotel in downtown Austin

By Shonda Novak
American-Statesman Staff

Construction has started on a second Westin hotel in Austin — a 366-room hotel that will rise 17 stories at the northeast corner of East Fifth Street and San Jacinto Boulevard.

Indiana-based White Lodging Services Corp. confirmed the groundbreaking in a statement to the American-Statesman. The hotel is due to open in the spring of 2015.

I like it, but I'm starting to wonder if this is the final design or not based on an article in the Austin Business Journal.

The general contractor is Hunt Construction Group, which is based in Scottsdale, Ariz. HKS Inc. based in Dallas is the architect. A spokeswoman for White Lodging said no current rendering is available.

Still not much to see at this site, but they are using this cool drilling rig that looks like something out of a sci-fi movie.

I just remembered there's a parkng garage attached to the east side of Southwest Tower. I parked there one summer. That should be a good place to go for photos once this project starts rising.

This will be a good addition to that stretch of 5th street where density is low. It looks like it will have ground floor retail, I sure hope thats the case!

I have come to detest that drill from the bottom of my heart. I work on Union Sq here in SF and I am on a outside coffee shop where they are constructing a subway right in front of us. They use a drill similar to this one and the noise is relentless.
