By all accounts the real Mayor Shaw was from the Dark Side. Have there been any previous posts on this thread about him?

He should have been brought to book for his criminal taste in footwear (what the heck is he wearing)? LOL.

Mayor Shaw looks like he knew how to celebrate any event. All images from LAPL.

I found a 'sister' sign to the Ambassador Dog & Cat Hospital sign on North Figueroa at Roselawn Place.

sadly, it's blank on both sides.

The sign is atop an animal hospital. (just like the Ambassador)

At first, I thought I was looking at this wrong.
Did the Hotel Westmoore actually build an addition in front of it's classic columned facade?

detail of the mystery addition

I am still looking for a photograph of the Hotel Westmoore with this addition.

ER: I haven't seen any pics of an intact Westmoore with the building in front. From what I can tell, it appears that the owners built an income-producing commercial structure (or sold off the frontage to new owners who built one). In any case, the center bay may have become the Westmoore's new entrance, giving the hotel the new address of 1004 West 7th, with commercial space on either side. Judging by insurance maps and Times ads, the new bldg was built after 1921. Antiques auction galleries appear to have a first tenant of the new 1000 space, as early as Oct 1922; a few years later, things got more interesting when the Health Center moved into 1000. It featured a "Corrective Eating Cafeteria," a health food store, and lectures by none other than Dr. Philip Lovell, he of the famed Lovell Health House in Los Feliz and the Lovell Beach House down in Newport Beach.

Its placement above a vet is a coincidence... but it seems that that's an old Western Auto sign. A cursory look reveals no picture of the un-blank sign, but Western Auto was at 5540 N Fig in 1956, for one date.

....and now for the 'noirish' part.....the Lincoln Zephyr & crime photos.

I don't think I've ever seen a Joseph Jasgur crime photo. Time to do some research.

Great pictures, Godzilla -many thanks. I'll search the internet for more information about Mayor Shaw.

It has been fascinating meeting the characters introduced on this site -before reading the thread, I hadn't heard of Mayor Shaw, Hazel Glab, Brenda Allen or the guy who started photo booths (amongst others). I knew of Mickey Cohen, but didn't know that he had run a menswear shop -did he supply Mayor Shaw, I wonder?

In 1928 the owl was trucked down to South Gate, where it stood at 8404 Long Beach Blvd for about 20 years. It was by this time called the Hoot Owl Cafe, serving more than ice cream. In 1949 the owl moved again, this time to 8711 Long Beach Blvd. It lasted there for 30 years.

It appears that Roy and Tillie moved with their owl down to South Gate; they and their two sons were living at 8173 Beeachwood Ave in 1930; it seems that Roy flew the coupe before the next census; in 1940 Tillie was living with one son at 2808 Illinois Ave in this interesting court:
GW is, as always, correct (and then some).

Anyone who's at all interested in roadside vernacular architecture may want to turn to Jim Heimann's first book California Crazy (1980), in print for 20 years. Jim brought out a new edition in 2010 covering the entire United States, California Crazy and Beyond. Amazon has used copies for $1.99 (a new paperback is $12). The original edition had the Toed Inn (just covered on this thread) on the cover. The new edition sports the Dog Cafe. The books include lots of photos (of course) and addresses, but not, alas, the interesting homes of the owners. We need (and value) GW for that.

Notes are amusing. "President Roosevelt delivers a speech, ignoring Los Angeles Mayor Frank Shaw, left. The president began his address without being introduced by the mayor, The Times said." Pfft. The "girls'" full street addresses (and ages) are reported, but not the men's? Guess they wanted to make sure they were good and "ruined".

A fave pic of you Mayor Shaw. Mayor and Mrs Shaw pack Christmas hampers for Los Angeles' poor, 1934.

It's hard to believe the Hotel Westmoore was already 30 years old in 1910!!

I guess you are suspecting right, Ethereal.
If we look to the Fremont Hotel (1880's) and then to the Bradbury Building (1893), we notice that the simplification of lines increases every ten years (to the 1970's I guess). The Westmore looks simpler than the Bradbury. So I'd say it was built in the 1900's.

If you look closely, you can make out the addition in front of the Hotel Westmoore. (circled in gray)

This photograph is dated 1955...two years before it's demise.

I've looked in vain for a street view. There must be one somewhere especially since the addition was built back in the 1920s.

My thoughts as well, Alvaro. Is it just me, or do I detect a whiff of Prairie School in those windows? They look astonishingly similar to the Melrose on Grand. It may be quibbling, but I don't think the Westmoore was built any earlier than 1890:

My patented Palm Tree Dating Device puts both those trees at around 15 years old.

Besides....who would even think of building a hotel at 7th and Francisco in 1880? That was way out in the sticks then. LA only had 11,000 people in 1880.

Here's a link to the first 30 pages of Historic Hotels Of Los Angeles and Hollywood. All your Downtown favorites are here....unfortunately the preview ends a couple pages into the chapter on Bunker Hill.

I thought this 'modern' Egyptian Theater was a different theater than Grauman's original Egyptian until I spotted the 'Pig N' Whistle' building
on the right. (the slide is dated 1966)

The Egyptian Theater with it's modernized entrance is at the extreme left in this view of Hollywood Blvd. (also from 1966)

The Egyptian Theater in 1942. The original design has already been altered.

The theater has been restored to it's original design by American Cinematheque.

By sheer coincidence 'How to Steal a Million' (1966) is playing on TCM tonight at 8:00 eastern time. How is that for serendipity?
