Rainier Tower, Seattle, Washington

I was visiting friends in Seattle, Washington over the weekend and saw the Rainier Tower in person. I took this pic and thought some of you would appreciate it given the way 150 N Riverside will be cantilevered.

Derp. Yes, I missed the ones that haven't been unearthed yet. thanks for pointing that out. Even with 16 caissons, it's still mind boggling how thin the core will be.

^ You know, at first, my reaction to your comment on the core's thinness was that I think you may have actually meant the tower's footprint - total area of the building that will touch terra firma. However, my first reaction was wrong.....looked at a bunch of cores, and the standard for new construction (last decade or so) tall, rectangular composite structure office towers in Chicago is for the core to be (I'm sure I could have tracked down actual measurements as well, just eyeballed some floorplans) 4 'elevators wide'. 150 is just 3 'elevators wide', so indeed, definitely a thinner core than your average office tower, which of course even makes the visual impact of the lower part of this building all the more dramatic....

I love that tower. It's by Minoru Yamasaki, who has another great one in Chicago and a beautiful synagogue in the suburb Glencoe.

Considering the design of 150 N Riverside, it's matt pit & caissons seems to be one of the more massive engineering endeavors in a long time.

Hopefully over-engineered! With heavy wind loads and a small narrow base, the caissons will have to bear an enormous amount of pressure.

I will miss seeing the trains, but I have the pics to remember.

Rebar being placed at the bottom of the excavated pit that will become the mat foundation.
