Work on High Line's Third Section to Start in July

April 2, 2012 2:45pm | By Mathew Katz, DNAinfo Reporter/Producer

"CHELSEA — Work on the High Line's third and final section could begin as early as July, DNAinfo has learned...

The city put out a request for proposals early Monday morning to manage the construction of the elevated park's third section, which will run from from West 30th to West 34th Streets, stretching from 10th to 12th avenues.

Companies interested in the project have until April 20 to put together a plan to build the third section and preliminary work would begin on July 15.

According to the request for proposal, the project will last roughly 29 months.
Friends of the High Line, which helps fund raise for and run the park, has previously said the project will cost roughly $90 million and will open to the public by spring 2014...."

No renders of what the sites actually being prepped for.

New Tower Plan Headed for West 28th Along the High Line

Monday, April 2, 2012, by Pete Davies

"Crews are ripping up the roof of the former Club Quo at 511 West 28th Street, prepping the plot for a new batch of residences that will rise along both sides of the High Line, just west of Tenth Avenue...

Along the High Line at 28th Street a 14-story slab will rise with 44 units above and a pool in the cellar, all butting up to the ginormous Avalon West Chelsea project that's now digging down next door. Rising over West 29th Street will be a blockier 14-story stack, with 128 units above and parking for 59 vehicles (and 162 bikes) on the lower floors. Across the High Line, at the southwest corner of Tenth and West 29th, a 25-story tower will rise, holding 140 units."

This is...interesting. Weird, but interesting. Not what I'd call art, and it would've made more sense to put it on display on the trackbed (or any of the new portions of track that they have), but let's just see how it goes.

Seems out of place to me, since the city banned steam locomotives from operating within city limits in 1923 under the Kaufman Act, so such a large locomotive would never have run on the High Line.

very good news!!

Yesterday, New York City officially acquired the third and final part of the High Line from CSX Transportation, which owned the one-half mile part of the old elevated railroad that snakes around the West Side Rail Yards.

Mayor Bloomberg crowed that it was "a monumental step toward our goal of opening the entire elevated railway to the public. In the three short years since the first section opened as a park, the High Line has become a treasured neighborhood oasis, a significant generator of economic activity for the entire city, and a celebrated icon for planners, designers, and leaders around the world. Transforming the final section of the elevated railway into public space will complete the vision - something that seemed all but impossible just over ten years ago."

Construction will start at the end of this year and be completed next year... and then the opening will be in 2014.

I love how it looks like some of the Hudson Yard buildings are going to hang over the 30th Street section from the look of the renderings. I hope there is an inviting entrance from the HL to the interior of the HY development.

City acquires final section of High Line from CSX

July 24, 2012

Quote:
The City of New York has acquired the third and final section of the High Line from CSX Transportation, Inc., a major step toward completing the vision of preserving the entire historic elevated railway and transforming it into public open space. The transfer of ownership clears the way for design and construction on the final stretch of the elevated rail viaduct to extend the High Line park to West 34th Street. Design of the rail yards section is underway, and construction is expected to begin later this year.

The rail yards section of the High Line represents one-third of the entire historic freight structure, and runs for one-half mile north of the current High Line park, wrapping around the West Side Yards, an active rail yards used by the Long Island Rail Road, bounded by West 30th and West 34th Streets to the south and north, and 10th and 12th Avenues to the east and west.

The LIRR storage yard is the site of the future 26-acre Hudson Yards mixed-use neighborhood being developed by Related Companies and Oxford Properties Group, which will include more than 12 million square feet of new office, residential, retail, and cultural space, as well as 14 acres of public space.

Wrapping around this new development, the High Line will be a fully integrated open space within Hudson Yards, connecting this new neighborhood with West Chelsea and the Meatpacking District, while providing an historic link to the industrial history on Manhattan’s West Side.

High Line to Open Third Section to Public Before Construction Begins

September 12, 2012
By Mathew Katz

Quote:

It could be your last chance to see the High Line in its "natural" state. Friends of the High Line will open the currently-undeveloped third section of the elevated park to a select group of visitors for self-guided tours at the start of next month. Over two weekends, Oct. 6, 7, 12, and 13, the public will get a glimpse of the section of the tracks that loop around the West Side Rail Yards. The tours will run from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on each day.

The half-mile section of track, still overgrown will plants, weeds, and wildflowers, runs roughly from West 30th to West 34th Streets and from 10th to 12th avenues. The upcoming tours could be the public's last chance to see the undisturbed High Line before work begins.

The park has given the public sneak previews of its new sections as part of Open House New York since 2009, but this year it's doubling its Rail Yards Weekends thanks to support from Japanese clothing giant UNIQLO, which has supported the maintenance and operations of the park for two years. Each visitor will get a UNIQLO shirt at the end of the tour.

Reservations are open to anyone who is 18 or older. For the first weekend, tickets are $5 and will be available at Open House New York's website on the morning of Sept. 27. The second weekend is free, though a reservation is needed and can be made through the High Line's website starting at 12 p.m. on Sept. 27.

After 13 years, an end is finally in sight for the High Line.

The city will hold a groundbreaking ceremony today for the elevated park's final phase.

The capstone stretch will wrap around the site of the planned Hudson Rail Yards from West 30th to West 34th Street.

When finished, it will extend over a mile, starting at Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District.

The group Friends of the High Line formed in 1999 to save the former freight rail line from demolition.

meatpacking architect morris adjimi's twisty 837 washington st (@w13th st -- right across from the standard hotel) is well underway despite having to lose 2-3 floors due to nimbys. the building was of course formerly a very hopping busy meatpacking business building. it's supposed to be a couple floors of retail on the bottom and offices above. no tenants yet far as i know, but it will be fine:

Line Gang
Aqua Tower architect to make New York debut in booming meatpacking district

Alan G. Brake
10.31.2012

Quote:
Jeanne Gang will soon join the likes of Neil Denari, Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel, and Shigeru Ban with a new project near the High Line in New York City. The roughly 180,000-square-foot office tower will rise along 10th Avenue between 13th and 14th streets, pending city approval.

The project will be Chicago-based Studio Gang’s New York debut, and its atypical form is a novel take on New York’s zoning. “We looked at what we could build as of right and realized that it would block out light, air, and views from the High Line,” principal Jeanne Gang told AN. Gang pointed out that the High Line creates the unusual urban condition of having a much-loved public space mid-block. “So we rearranged the building’s mass so that the tallest part to face 10th Avenue,” she said.

In addition to pulling the building to the lot-line along 10th Avenue, Studio Gang’s design calls for angled notches, slicing off wedge-shaped portions of the tower, allowing river views and minimizing shadows on the elevated park. The design for the building has a glass skin, which will be smooth on the vertical portions and faceted in the cutaways. “The faceted edge emphasizes what I call the ‘solar carving,”’ she said. “The serrated-edge demarcates the special character of these spaces.”

Those cutaways look amazing. I can just imagine the glass shimmering from the sun. Another beautiful and unique building for the Highline area!
