Unhappy NEW YORK | 160 Madison Ave | 452 FT | 42 FLOORS

New York YIMBY:

Construction Update: 160 Madison Avenue
BY: NIKOLAI FEDAK ON MARCH 5TH 2014 AT 10:00 AM

Quote:
New permits have been filed for 160 Madison Avenue, which is already under construction; the documents reveal a minor height increase for the project, which has been upped from 379 to 452 feet. The architect of record is SLCE, and the developer is JD Carlisle. An insider tipped YIMBY that the development’s planned insides have also changed, and it will have rentals rather than condominiums.

The alterations to the tower’s plans are relatively minor, and the height increase means the building will eventually stand 41 stories tall — or 42, including the rooftop bulkhead. Construction has proceeded very rapidly over the past several months, and as of November’s update, the crane had only just been installed. Now, 160 Madison stands approximately one-third of its final height.
....

160 Madison Avenue will have a total of 319 units, and completion is expected in 2015.

Because it's certain to be an ugly pile that interacts with its location with all the grace of a drive thru Taco Bell.

I like how it grabs the corner. Looks good to me.

I don't have the best camera, but I work so close to this construction I wanted to post a few pictures of the progress.

I definitely liked the original design better than this one (this one isn't too bad, but...). I think one of the architects (or zoning regulators) might have spilled a little lame sauce on the design and that's why it was changed to the current design. Not sure, just a theory.

Lame sauce gets everywhere.

I've always wondered - how does one measure how "well it interacts?" I don't see what's so bad about it.

Honestly, using "interaction with its location" as a criticism for a building sounds rather pretentious.

Not fine!

It rises out of a low-slung podium that totally destroys the formerly intact street-wall along Madison Avenue.

It's the kind of development that would be fine in the Midwest, but is completely out of place in Manhattan, where urban form is crucial; a development's relationship to its surroundings is important when considering its impact on the city, and this building does not relate, at all.

The tower in and of itself is not terrible, it's just not respectful of the location or context.

^ Agreed. A failure of NYC zoning again. Usually there are streetwall minimum height requirements to prevent that but not in that spot for some reason.

too tall for a taco bell. imagine how much diarrhea would ensue with a 42-storey taco bell.

It doesn't seem like it has taken long to construct this tower. The angle is interesting, hope it works well for the neighborhood.

It's my duty as a Skyscraperpage forum member to post buildings under construction within my view...even if one of them is 42 floors of "meh" crowned by boxes of "bleh."

I have to say though, it has been quite beautiful watching the sunsets through the hollow floors. The shape isn't that bad actually..... If only they hadn't tacked on that Darth Vader cladding and lowered those shipping crates onto the roof.

What a weird building. Aesthetically it looks like it came from a place called Houston from a time called the Eighties. It meets the street like it was designed in a complete vacuum, with no knowledge of its location or its dialogue with neighbors.

Weird indeed.
