If I recall correctly, the developer actually wanted very badly to keep the smokestacks but something about zoning or landuse or whatever came up and precipitated them being torn down. It would have been cheaper for the developer to leave them in all honesty. In reality, once this is done, it's just the library lagging. The entire waterfront from Annabel Basin to Newtown Creek is likely to be built out in the next 10 years. Hell, in the next 2, if the library gets built, the whole thing will be built out all the way down to Borden already.

Not fooling around on getting the park open. Any work start on the foundations for the first 2 towers over there?

That park is really moving pretty quickly. It's supposed to open in 2013 right?

Yeah. The two towers are immediately north of the school (the pics suggest nothing is happening yet) and then the l shaped lot around the school.

They still have to do remediation on those sites probably, so it might be a while before those buildings starts.

Its a shame they closed that water taxi. That place was always full. Maybe an incarnation of it will open to the north by Waters Edge.

Hunters Point takes a major step toward its dream library
New Queens Library branch will boast a bold design and focus on the environment

By Lisa L. Colangelo
October 4, 2012

Quote:
The residents of Hunters Point are a step closer to getting the library of their dreams. The Queens Library is hosting a site dedication ceremony on Friday for the planned $28 million facility, an environmental and architectural marvel on the East River with sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline.

“I don’t know of any other library in New York City that is on the waterfront, abuts a state park and lies directly across the river from the United Nations,” said City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, who started working on the project during his previous job with the library. “I think this will be a landmark in future years.” Van Bramer will join Queens Borough President Helen Marshall — who helped raise funds for the project — and local children on Friday to plant “trees of knowledge” that will hopefully grow along with the library.

The population has boomed in the once-gritty section of Long Island City, where factories and warehouses used to dominate the landscape. Those dormant structures were torn down in recent years, replaced by gleaming luxury towers. Shops and restaurants have slowly followed. But Van Bramer pointed out the area still lacks a community center. The closest library is a small site at the Citigroup Building. “There’s this incredible baby boom where there are strollers everywhere and yet we have no library,” said Van Bramer. “You can’t really have a neighborhood without a library.”

The library went with a bold design by celebrity architect Steven Holl that features large windows and a roof terrace. The 21,500-square-foot building is expected to open in 2015.

Queens Library CEO Thomas Galante said the building is going to be as “green” as possible. “There will be no air conditioning units on the roof, we are looking into using geothermal wells,” said Galante. “There is a whole environmentally friendly component that has to do with both education and experience.”

It'll be in architectural books when finished, for sure.
