Looks good! I'm glad Melbourne and the state of Victoria is doing what it can to ensure the event stays there. One day I will most definitely go to Melbourne for the Australian Open. I'm a big tennis fan, particularly when it comes to the Slams. As I've always wanted to visit Australia, the Open seems like the perfect excuse to go.

Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp's (FJMT) masterplan for the Southbank Cultural Precinct:

"...The Southbank Cultural Precinct Redevelopment Master Plan will transform the area into Australia’s foremost and arts, cultural and education venue.

The project includes an upgrade and extension to existing Arts Centre facilities (addressing operational issues and ensuring they exceed contemporary standards), significant new public domain with a pedestrian emphasis, and the creation of the Sturt Street Cultural Spine to integrate the precinct with Southbank Promenade, the city and other cultural facilities along Sturt Street.

The redevelopment affords the opportunity to build community awareness and create a new benchmark in sustainability. fjmt’s vision for the project is for a visitor experience that simultaneously educates and delights; a series of safe, healthy, comfortable and engaging environments which are achieved using sustainable means..."

Team appointed to build $1 billion Victorian cancer centre

11 January 2012

A consortium has been appointed to design and build the new $1 billion Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre, the architectural design team led by Design Inc and Silver Thomas Hanley in partnership with McBride Charles Ryan.

Victorian Minister for Health David Davis and Federal Minister for Health Tanya Plibersek in December joined together to formally appoint Plenary Health as the successful consortium to build the new facilities.

The contract signing followed the successful conclusion of a structured negotiation phase, undertaken in accordance with national public-private-partnership (PPP) guidelines.

The lead parties within the Plenary Health consortium are the Plenary Group as sponsor and investor, Grocon and PCL as the builder in a joint venture and Honeywell as the facilities/ maintenance manager.

“This contract signing means construction of the two new VCCC facilities, on the site of the former Royal Dental Hospital in Parkville and across the road on the Royal Melbourne Hospital City Campus, will start shortly,” Davis said.

Construction of the VCCC facilities is expected to be complete by the end of 2015, with commissioning and service delivery to commence in 2016.

The VCCC aspires to be one of the best comprehensive cancer centres in the world through the collaboration of recognised leaders in cancer research, treatment and care.

As a designated strategic project under the Victorian Industry Participation Policy (VIPP), there is a mandated ninety per cent minimum local content requirement applying to the overall design, construction and fit-out of the new VCCC facilities.

The new VCCC, which will become a prominent landmark in Melbourne’s bio-medical Parkville precinct, will accommodate the following clinical facilities:

160 overnight inpatient cancer beds
42-bed Intensive Care Unit
110 same day beds
A dedicated Clinical Trials Unit with 24 treatment places
8 medihotel beds, with additional space for Country Patient overnight accommodation
8 operating theatres and two procedure rooms
8 radiation therapy bunkers
The new VCCC also includes dedicated space to house an estimated 1,200 cancer researchers. Education and training will be key functions of the VCCC, in addition to the provision of cancer treatment.
