Great Canadian Hospital Thread

Hospitals of your city, former, current, active and converted.

Our oldest hospital, the old General, now the Elizabeth Bruyère, specializing in long-term and palliative care.

http://urbsite.blogspot.ca/2013/04/g...-speaking.html

New General and Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, both built in the 70s.

Our oldest active hospital, the Ottawa Civic, birthplace of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. To be replaced a few blocks east in about 10 years. Ottawa Heart Institute on the upper, right.

Similarly to the old General, it will likely become a long-term care facility once the new Civic opens in 10 years.

The Montfort, built in the 50s, Ottawa Francophone Health Centre. The Harris government tried to shut it down in the 90s (after they had closed the Riverside and Grace), but it was saved by the SOS Montfort movement.

The Monfort is Ontario's only French language teaching hospital.

Hospital trivia. The City of Waterloo, Ontario has no hospital. Both of K-W's hospitals are located in Kitchener, although the Grand River Hospital"s main campus (former K-W Hospital) is located just inside the municipal boundary.

Yeah, we're not winning this one.

I'll wait for SHH to post At least the Waterford Hospital has parts of the building which are nice? Because they date back to the 1800s. The disadvantage of that: things literally haven't been updated since the 1800s there.

The glory that was the former Saint John General Hospital:

Wikimedia

Attic

Demolished and replaced by an unspectacular regional hospital located nowhere near the urban core of the city like the General was.

Our main hospital is Kingston General Hospital, located in the central area of the city immediately adjacent to Queen's University's main campus

In this image, the hospital is in the foreground and the university in the background:

(Benson Steel)

KGH was founded in the 1830s. The main building is modern, but the northern part of the campus contains some surviving buildings from the 19th century, such as this one here:

(Ontario Plaques)

This particular building was used as the meeting place for the Canadian legislature when Kingston was the capital.. as such, it's the site of our first national Parliament, a fact commemorated in one of the red plaques visible near the entrance:

That Saint-John hospital. Would have been an iconic structure for the city were it still around today. Tragic.

The Montreal General Hospital - 1955. A monstrous set of buildings perched midway up the mountain, it has 23 stories and is 95m tall.

It's truly imposing when you approach it from cote-des-neiges road. It's a very difficult building to grasp from street level, but it's true size can only be admired from above

The old Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville, originally built by the USAAF for Harmon air base in the 1950s. It's the long building in the centre with the H shaped footprint.

The new Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital, opened in 2003

Corner Brook's first hospital, now known as the O'Connell Centre and recently vacated after use as a long term care centre for the past several decades

The current Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook (presently slated for replacement)
100_3826

It started out its life as a TB Santorium in the 1950s. The building was doubled in size when a massive addition was added to the front of the building later to accommodate the regional hospital

This is the best view I can find of the entire thing. Old sanitorium on the left, newer building on the right, connected in the middle. The building above them is the nursing school and residence. The residence wing was shut down this past summer.

Nice post too, Trevor.

Interesting thread, stock of hospitals in this country is remarkable.
Even though I have no patients for this thread either, no doctors or nurse, I do have pictures of Saskatoon's hospitals though.

St. Paul's Hospital on the frontline of treating patients in the inner city Saskatoon & west end community.

Got a better picture of the Old Hospital while we were out in Quidi Vidi this evening, but this building is technically in adjacent Hoylestown.

Winnipeg's biggest is the Health Sciences Centre, an untamed sprawling beast of a complex which includes the health sciences faculty of the University of Manitoba. It can really only be photographed from the air:

It's constantly evolving, as more construction has taken place since that photo was taken.

If HSC is 1, then 1A is St. Boniface Hospital, originally founded by the Grey Nuns. St. B is effectively the "other" comprehensive hospital in the city.

Both HSC and St. B are close to downtown despite not actually being in it.

Then there are the community hospitals.

Victoria General Hospital on the south side, near the University of Manitoba (but not a teaching hospital)

Grace Hospital in western suburbia:

Seven Oaks Hospital serving the northwestern parts of town:

Concordia Hospital in the northeast:

And last is Misericordia Health Centre which was downgraded from full hospital status in the 90s but still provides urgent care along with a mishmash of other specialized services:

There's a redevelopment planned for Misericordia which will introduce some more contemporary architectural elements to the complex:
