I wonder where it was in Long Beach, and if it still stands? (I can't find any evidence of it.) Stiles Clements does not seem to have been the architect of the Mytinger & Casselberry building, but I am reminded of our old Miracle Mile friend, the beautiful Mullen-Bluett building, which I think can always bear another look:

Quite a few photos of the school have been posted, but I've never noticed that cool looking chapel.

I love that photo. I like the shoeshine booth. I'm sure the shoeshine guy could tell many a tale, if he chose to.

OK, I guess I'm too young to remember when the new year began on January 29th.... And that padlock on what would apparently be one of Brenda's girls if this was 1947 rather than '27, '17, or '07 is most disturbing... (what year IS this, anyway?). "Bring your KEYS"?.... Hmmm. The Masquers were one wild bunch! Still, I'd rather hang out with them than him:

This reminded me of an article I had read about the Masqer's clubhouse being torn down. This isn't the same article but it's kind of interesting. I didn't realize it once belonged to actor Antonio Moreno.

Found 'er, 1702-1730 Santa Fe!

The question as to the architect...that's a good one. It's a damn handsome Late Moderne.

(And I agree, any excuse to look at the Mullen & Bluett is a good one.)

Beaudry-- That is a great find-- amazing-- I looked all over Long Beach (via laptop, that is). Thanks for the Christmas present--now all I need is a hatchet to cut down those trees in front of the Mytinger & Casselberry building. SoCal has too many trees, I've decided. They get in the way! Time for eggnogg! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays to all!

Having been in Highland Park for a decade and change, I've wanted to produce a brochure that details these are the buildings you can tag. These are the buildings we humbly ask you to not tag.

Do we have to produce a slick foldout called "Stealing Copper from National Register Buildings: It's Also a Moral Crime!" Of course, I'm not altogether certain "David Gardner of Reno" would give it due consideration.

The Garfield (why isn't Beelman better known and respected?) http://articles.latimes.com/2010/aug...tobar-20100813 is LA's premier example of monumental Deco at its most elegant. It always unnerves people when we're walking from the Cicada club to the Seven Grand afterward, and I touch the Garfield and kiss my fingers. Yeah, it's basically a giant mezuzah.

Fourth Street west of Hope

OK, let me start by saying that this picture has vexed my OCD addled brain for over a year:

Source: http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/assets.../AAA-EN-106-31

It is captioned, "View looking north on Boylston between First and Temple, Los Angeles, 1937" and includes a Hotel Phiben. However, none of the pieces seemed to fit. I finally had a breakthrough when my google search turned up a "Hotel Philbin" at 1015 W 4th Street that was torn down in 1958 for a freeway.

I then rediscovered this pic from an old post that confirmed that the mislabeled pic is actually a view looking west from 4th & Hope on Bunker Hill.

LAPL

the photo is not dated, it shows the Briggs on the south side of 4th, and then the hildreth mansion on the north side of 4th.

is that the Engstrum poking it's head up a few buildings to the left of the central library, (or is that the top of the tower of the normal school)?

this photo nicely shows that until the construction of the miserable 4th street viaduct, 4th did not extend heading west further than hope street, due to the steep terrain.
This forgotten corner of old LA was eventually obliterated by the Harbor Freeway and the 4th Street viaduct.

Great sleuthing! This is exactly the kind of thing that makes this thread so addictive!
