That's the problem.
Yes, G/L has a lot of positives, but it also has some _huge_ negatives.
1. UT, the 800 pound gorilla both politically and financially (and the State, in the form of UT) doesn't want it.
2. It requires tearing out _3/4_ of the lanes on Guadalupe (a fact conveniently not disclosed to the public during the 2000 vote).
My understanding is that your proposal for the G/L route requires significant cooperation from the state (ROW land). Are you really so sure Austin can completely blow off the wishes of one arm of the state, and then turn around and ask them for a bunch of free land?
And are you so sure that all the suburbanites in Austin (a greater percentage than in 2000) are going to vote for a plan for a rail line they'll usually never ride, but which requires tearing out lanes for their preferred mode of transport (the car)?
