It does have good lines for it.

Perfect for target marketing. "Tailor your message to your audience." The advertising would get so specific that it would make the poor residents feel terribly paranoid.

Slow news day...Here's a site plan filing from today for a hotel on S. Congress. It's more or less behind (South of) the HEB at Oltorf:

I read a rumor (just a rumor) on the South Austin Memories Facebook group the says the Sandy's Hamburgers restaurant on Barton Springs is closing, and that the property has been purchased. Has anyone heard anything about that? I checked with the city and didn't see any permit filings associated with the restaurant.

Oh no! Another Austin icon set to be destroyed by evil developers so they can build another expensive place for people from California to live!

Yeah, I doubt it anyway. I couldn't find any permit filings to suggest it. The most recent permit for the property was for new lighting back in 2011.

Mock it if you want, but Sandy's is indeed a South Austin icon. I will be sad if it closes. I won't totally miss it because I prefer Dan's, but it's definitely in the fabric of our town.

Yeah, there are definitely a handful of places that I'd love to see remain forever. That said, Taco Cabana isn't one of them.

I will miss it too, but their service is bad and I had a weird incident where an employee shouted at us because she couldn't understand why everyone referred to their frozen custard as custard because clearly it is ice cream even though it says custard on the sign and tastes like frozen custard...

Unfortunately restaurants can fail while looking fabulously successful because of screwing up simple things such as caring.

If the rumor were to be true, I hope they would also take out that Whataburger next door. I like Whataburger and eat at that particular one more than any other. But that one is filthy and full of weird people (and not Austin fun weird) late at night when I'm usually there. (I know that might seem like I'm the pot calling the kettle black.) But they have let homeless people hang out inside and even sleep inside at night. I've been hit up for money by an angry pshyco while eating my burger which makes for unpleasant dining. There used to be a guy who would bring in a box of little toy airplanes and sit at a table and pretend to fly them around. Although he was probably more of the "Austin fun weird".

Something may be planned for the site of the ugly Church of Scientology building on Guadalupe. Here's a filing from yesterday for drilling on the site:

Here's the site from Streetview:

So an update on Sandy's on Barton Springs. Apparently there's some other place named Sandy's (but spelled differently) in North Austin that the person was talking about that is closing, but not the one on Barton Springs Road. I can't seem to find that post now. It was probably deleted since it went into the typical Nimby rant about how developers are destroying Austin. Anyway, I didn't find any recent permits to suggest any development was happening with it, and the county tax records still listed the original owners.

That's good to hear Kevin. Yesterday I went downtown to see the fireworks and all the construction that's going on. The Fairmont is starting to come out of the ground on the northern part, but there still is a very big hole. Also I drove to the new Austin Surf Park location, and all I can say is wow. That place reminds me of COTA when it first started construction, as well as all the new road & bridge construction going on near the airport. I'll see if I can get some pictures today.

Here's an updated filing with some drawings (but no elevations) of the hotel by the HEB at Congress and Oltorf. It'll be a Guesthouse Hotel:

https://www.austintexas.gov/devrevie...erRSN=11380275

Edit: Don't expect an architectural gem with this one. They only have two hotels in Texas. They are both in El Paso including the El Paso Airport Guesthouse. It looks like what would be expected of an El Paso airport hotel.

Don't know whether this has been posted. Looks like the end of the Austin Music Hall, traded in for another smallish office tower.

Never mind. Looks like Kevin beat me to it with a new thread already.

Not sure when the last forum meet-up was (last one I was on Sandra Bullock asked us not to take photos of her when we kinda looked like a gang of paparazzi) but I think there's enough going on that we should do it. Kevin, e-mail me some dates that work for you (wknds) and I'll set it up.

Exclusive: New hotel planned near Austin Convention Center

Looks like the hotel will be incorporated with the convention center expansion.

I could get down with an expansion proposal that integrates a vertical use like that.
