I checked the building permits for 107 S. Rampart, the building was originally built in 1909 at the corner, was moved to 107 in 1925. The windows were changed out in 2011 and the roof was redone in 2015. The same house has been there since 1925.

Though there is a Studebaker Lark (a '62) partially visible in the vintage image, the Stude near 107 S Rampart is one of the Hawk series. That said, the original 107 was moved to 254 S Carondelet St in 1925 (and demolished in 1960), with 101 then being moved onto its original lot, as BillinGlendaleCA notes. The Craftsman house two over from 107 in the vintage shot (119 S Rampart) was built in 1909; the Spanish-style house (127 S Rampart, rather than 125) was built in 1932.

As everyone knows we have seen countless images of Angels Flight but here's one we haven't seen.


This original slide captures a beautiful blue Thunderbird passing in front of Royal Liquors. (a vegetarian cafeteria was in this spot back in the 1920s)

Seller's description:...."Original Slide 1960's Los Angeles Railway / Thunderbird Car / Policmen"

If you look closely, there are clues that the slide was taken during Christmas time. (a decorated red pole on left. . .a wreath in the liquor store window)

One thing that caught my attention was the sign to the right of the stoplight.

The top sign says No Unnecessary Noise. Why would this sign be necessary at this particular spot?

The other sign is even more intriguing.

This is the best enlargement I could muster.

Best guess: "Petroleum and explosive trucks prohibited". I imagine the unnecessary noise prohibition was to discourage horn-honkers in the tunnel.

I believe there's a similar prohibition against explosives and flammables in the Sepulveda tunnel under LAX's runway.

The Noise sign is for horn honking in the tunnel, remember that apartments are right next to the tunnel. The wreath in the window is a definate maybe but the red pole is just a pedestal for the fire alarm and police call box. Yes there are coppers on the corner one with a white hat (traffic cop that directs traffic at the intersection) and black hat probably beat cops). also there is a uniformed man going to cross the street, probably a L.A. City Marshal judging by the two toned uniform, courts are just up the street..

A rather gloomy day in downtown LA. Whilst looking for clearer images of the stair/ramps walkway up to Clay St., I came across this group of photos. The Unnecessary Noise sign predated the Explosives sign. One photo also includes white hat police actually directing traffic. I wonder if it’s the same guy, and how many years he spent at that intersection. Serious Noir.

Of all the different styles of streetlights this is my least favorite. ....It's way too extravagant for my taste.


I feel the same about the lights that were installed around the Civic Center in the 1970s. (or was it the 1960s?)
