I am just drooling at the thought of these!

Quote:
Saved from Dumpster: Amazing map collection makes librarians tingle

A Mount Washington home slated for demolition yields a trove of maps, including one from 1592.The acquisition gives the city library one of the country's top five library map archives.

The discovery that real estate agent Matthew Greenberg made when he stepped inside a Mount Washington cottage will put the Los Angeles Public Library on the map.

Stashed everywhere in the 948-square-foot tear-down were maps. Tens of thousands of maps. Fold-out street maps were stuffed in file cabinets, crammed into cardboard boxes, lined up on closet shelves and jammed into old dairy crates. Wall-size roll-up maps once familiar to schoolchildren were stacked in corners. Old globes were lined in rows atop bookshelves also filled with maps and atlases...

...[LAPL map historian Glen] Creason called the find unbelievable. "I think there are at least a million maps here," he said. "This dwarfs our collection — and we've been collecting for 100 years."...

...Creason was also enthralled by the discovery of several "Mapfox" Los Angeles street guides published in 1944. Creason said in his 32-year library career he had never seen one...
Full LA Times article is HERE, and there's another article at Curbed LA.

Just wow! I can't wait for these to start popping up in LAPL searches!

There appears to be plenty online about ecdysiast Ann Corio, but here's a start...

I don't remember if we've ever seen the Florentine Gardens as it stands today--great find

This is quite interesting and confusing! So 5955 was Florentine Gardens in the thirties and forties, a union hall in the mid fifties (judging by the cars on the left) and then sometime later became Florentine Gardens once again???

Weird

Could this possibly be the old Florentine Gardens Nightclub?? (a favorite haunt of Elizabeth Short a.k.a. the 'Black Dahlia')

Imagine a stripped down version of the Florentine Gardens Nightclub.

Not sure when it might have become Florentine Gardens again, but I can tell you that in the early 1980s it was one of a very small number of Hollywood venues in which punk rock bands were allowed to play.

I saw quite a few shows there myself, although not this one from 1981:

Hmm...somewhere along the line it changed address. The sign on the front of the building distinctly says 5955. The door from where the guy is coming out of would be 5951 per Google earth. The building at 5959 looks like it could have some history as does 5935. Stay away from 6037...the museum of Death. Google earth is wonderful for cruising!

Here is the cover of a program from 1952. I am not sure if this is shortly before it became a union hall or once it was reverted back to Florentine Gardens. (I'm guessing the former)

I don't know what 'benevolent variety artists' means per say. Was this a charity event perhaps?

Motels on Sepulveda

FTR I went back to this stretch of Sepulveda and got some righteous nighttime views. You can check them out in the new blog post here.

Drooling here as well.

As someone who, as a kid in the 60s and early 70s would bolt out of the car at gas station stops on family vacations and run into the service office to see if there were any FREE MAPS to add to my collection.....

I am ecstatic.

I still have a few of them. Probably 50 or so. Mostly Chevron, Shell, Union 76.

Imagine my excitement as a 10 year old visiting Colorado and the dominant gas stations were Conocos

In the center of the photograph is Florentine Gardens. If I remember correctly a side bar at F.G. was called Zanzibar (you can clearly see the sign).
Closest to the camera is the Hawaii Theater.

Now that is a HEADLINE and a half! Good find GW.
I see that Jean Wallace is mentioned (featured several times here on 'noirish'), as well as another dancer from Florentine Gardens,
Yvonne DeCarlo.
