I don't think it's really fair to compare a tiny city like Des Moines to the entire city of NYC. Des Moines is as populous as single NYC neighborhood.

Rates aside, NYC has hundreds more murders per year than Des Moines, and I think it goes without saying that the rough parts of NYC are larger and more numerous than the rough parts of Des Moines. And NYC's worst of the worst is most likely more intense than the worst parts of Des Moines. In addition to that, your average citizen in each city has only a small chance of being a victim of violent crime.

And that's why rates alone aren't the best way to gauge "danger". Of course i could be wrong about Des Moines...

You're not really that far off. A few years ago, DSM had 5 murders the entire year. While things have been trending up since then as the metro grows, this year has been as rough as any since the 1990's gang/crack days. I would wager 16 murders is still quite an anomaly, and already exceeds the total for all of last year.

Not that there aren't concentrated poverty and crime issues here, but about 1/3 of the murders this year have been domestic disputes.

A lot of Midwest cities are seeing their highest totals since the 1990's. What's driving the higher number of homicides, still drugs and gang wars?

The opioid epidemic is probably to blame for gang wars in the Midwest.

SF is at 32 now. A UPS worker shot up the UPS distribution center in SF today, killing three coworkers and himself, and injuring several others. Also, a man was found dead in the excelsior district last week.

Oakland is at 30, after a double fatal shooting in east Oakland.

Ithaca just had its first murder of the year. The city usually averages about one murder every five years or so. But since last August there have been three.

* Ithaca College student stabbed to death on Cornell campus.
* A man shot and killed a UPS driver at Walmart saying he thought he killed Donald Trump.
* Most recent is a transgender woman killed in building under construction in my old neighborhood.
