Nice picture, Jerry. It looks like you can make out the hole on the Market St. side now.

Will THIS be the critical mass that demands effective policing (and prosecution) to clean up Mid-Market St? I hoped NEMA would be. And before that "6X6" (then known as Market St. Place).

Is it even possible? Can we have a "grand boulevard" of mostly new or renovated buildings lived in by nice middle class taxpayers and still have the environment outside those buildings be a bazaar of drug dealing and stolen goods peddling and panhandling? Maybe "only in San Francisco".

I have to say, that every time I visit this part of SF, every year, it is getting worse. Zombies and syringes everywhere. I was hoping that all these projects would improve that area, but I'm astonished that it has had the opposite effect.

I was hoping this area would be "gentrified " with the new businesses and developments. As we saw, new restaurants closed up and even Rite Aide went out . I am led to believe nothing in this World can clean up this area.

As a San Franciscan born and raised, I no longer go downtown, which is a shame.

There is so much money floating through the city, the property values are sky high and developers are looking for projects. It's too bad the city has such insane policies that only hurt themselves and the people they intend to help, putting them in a perpetual state of need and handouts.

I don't think it's had "the opposite effect". More like no effect or not much. The whole city is getting much worse. What you notice on Market St. is pretty true everywhere. I was struck by a poster on the Nextdoor site who was assaulted by an addled street person (I hate calling them "homeless" because who knows if they are?) next to the "Salesforce" Transit Center and chased for a block or more. The city's most expensive condo--the 181 Fremont penthouse--is there.

Anyway, the main reason I care about development on Market St specifically, aside from my general interest in the subject, is the hope--so far in vain--that it will "improve" that important street. And there's certainly a LOT of development happening even if it's not having much effect.

1977 - yes. it is much more noticeable with the eye. the camera's perspective does not show the "indentation" as well. The recess will be 10 stories high when enclosed.

^^I will now be looking for signs of the other indentations and diversions from a solid wall seen on the latest renderings I know about:

S.F. planners back bold original vision for Mid-Market project
Photo of John King
John King Feb. 22, 2016 Updated: Feb. 22, 2016 10:39 a.m.

The current proposal for the final phase of Trinity Place, which is set to rise across from UN Plaza and the Orpheum Theatre at 8th and Market streets. The cantilevered summit and through-block portal in the renderings shown to city planners in February of 2016 are a return to the approved 2006 design; last year, the developer proposed a much less adventurous slab.

. . . the developers have turned back the clock and embraced their original scheme.

I’ll withhold a verdict until something gets built and we learn if reality matches the renderings. Still, the undone bait-and-switch shows the value of a planning system often faulted for being too fussy . . . .

Yes, John, I too am withholding my verdict along with you.

Dececember 13, 2019

The "indentation" (terrace) outline is now visible on the northwest corner marked by a wood outline where the 2 portable toilets are located. So glad to see the building matches the last architectural drawing.
