Another downtown hotel

Bishop Parker sold the downtown 5 story warehouse to later turn into a hotel. Ascent Hospitality has purchased the 80k warehouse. Ascent operates the Doubletree downtown.

Montgomery to be headquarters for rail company

Montgomery will be the southeastern headquarters for the new system. The developer, Corridor Capital Rail, is also looking at two different possible locations for a train depot in the heart of downtown, near the Biscuits stadium and restaurants.

Corridor Capital Rail will open its Montgomery office by July 1st.

“One of the first of many routes that they hope to launch is the old Gulf Breeze route but instead of going from Mobile to Montgomery to Birmingham, they want to link Mobile to Montgomery to Birmingham all the way up to Huntsville with intermittent stops in smaller communities such as Atmore and also provide multiple frequencies each day to give the traveler more options instead of only one train per day,” McFarland explained.

I DO hope that this is legit.

...If this kind of rail access is given to Alabama, there is no telling what our economy can do for the poorest and the richest.

German auto supplier coming to Montgomery

Gerhardi will build a $37.9 million facility that will have 235 jobs. Construction will start next year.

"Montgomery has assembled a robust network of Asian auto suppliers to service the Hyundai assembly operation," said Greg Canfield, secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce. "As a German company, Gerhardi adds another dimension to Montgomery's auto supply chain, along with 235 new jobs."

Welp, at least it will help replace some of the jobs the State is eliminating.....

Good news either way.

Old White Funeral home location

Does anyone know what is going on at the old Whites Funeral Home location on South Jackson Street? Construction fence is up and they are tearing down the retaining wall.

Food trucks

We are finally on the food truck train. Five food trucks are planned to open soon. The city passed the ordinance to allow it.

"There will be five spots for the food trucks in two locations- three spots in the old State House Inn parking lot and two spots on Ripley Street between the Alabama State House and the Folsom Building."

Escapology and VR arcade coming

Escapology will be at 130 Commerce Street next door to SaZa Italian. It will be one of the nations largest.

"Two of the nation’s hottest entertainment trends are headed to downtown Montgomery in a big way, part of a high-tech, $750,000 makeover to a warehouse space in the city’s entertainment district.

It’ll be the newest location of Escapology, an Orlando-based chain that specializes in elaborately designed, film set-quality escape rooms and movie-style scenarios. There are Escapology locations in Austin, Texas, Cincinnati, Las Vegas, San Diego and more. But local owner TJ Williford said the 130 Commerce St. spot next to Sa Za Italian restaurant in Montgomery is going to be one of the most comprehensive in the chain, and one of the biggest escape-themed attractions in the nation."

The Columbus Square apartments on Columbus Street are coming along. No details on completion date.

The first phase of the new community will consist of 80 market-rate and affordable apartments/townhomes, serving families of all income levels. The cost of the project is approximately $13.2 million.

Evette Hester, Executive Director of the MHA states, “Columbus Square will be an invaluable asset to Montgomery, adding rooftops to a downtown district that has become fertile ground for economic activity. It will help fill a demand for high-quality, affordable housing in Montgomery.”

I work in Folsom and the signs are up out back. We are excited for an alternative, although our lunch group does our best to share the love between the downtown lunch spots!

Goat Haus Biergarten planned for back of an 1880s cottage on Clay Street overlooking downtown.

They’re putting together some private funding for a separate project that would extend the hill behind the cottage and provide more room for parking or other businesses. “I’ve got a guy who wants to start a barbecue business. We’ve got a test market right here,” Weddle said, pointing to The Heights apartments down the hill.

Common Bond Brewers opening a taproom and brewery. Opening in the fall of 2017.

Work is already underway on the new home of Common Bond Brewers at 424 Bibb St., the former Lowe’s Auto Parts building. It will feature a taproom for beer tasting, and the company will also brew and package the beer on site for distribution to restaurants, bars and stores.

“Downtown Montgomery is up and coming, and we wanted to be a part of that,” Common Bond brewmaster Andrew McNally said. “In the five years that I’ve lived here, I’ve seen a real change downtown and there’s a lot more to come.”

The Montgomery Internet Exchange located at the RSA Data Center on Dexter Ave. now has 13 companies contracted and more on the way. This could bring high paying tech jobs to the city.

The cyber connections will give Montgomery a leg up when tech businesses are looking at cities for startup or expansion.

The internet exchange is a point where internet service providers can exchange data and gather data from content providers.

It allows for faster internet connections and is paving the way for economic growth.

Members of the exchange include: Akamai Technologies, Wide Open West (WOW!), Troy Cablevision Inc., Hayneville Fiber Transport d/b/a Camellia Communications, Southern Light LLC, Packet Clearing House, Verisign, Hurricane Electric, the Montgomery County Commission, CenturyLink, State of Alabama, and the City of Montgomery.

The mayor says Montgomery is now competing with cities like Miami and Jacksonville for volume.

According to Mayor Strange, the next big move for the project would be creating an internet pipeline, connecting Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, and Auburn all together through fiber.

Capitol Bicentennial Park in 2019

The state of Alabama plans to build a more than $1-2 million Bicentennial Park along Dexter Avenue, in an area between the two state buildings that face the Capitol. Two ellipses, which a lawmaker compared to the Vietnam War Memorial, will sit on opposite sides of the street and walk visitors through the state’s history.

Plans call for 16 bas relief sculptures telling a story that starts with Native Americans. The elliptical-shaped structures will be recessed into bowl-shaped areas and surrounded by landscaping work, Sen. Arthur Orr said.

Orr said plans call for the Montgomery park to open by early 2019.

The state also announced more events as part of a three-year bicentennial birthday commemoration, starting with a launch ceremony May 5 in Mobile.

Changes coming to the downtown business incubator

The two business incubator and The Bullet which On A Roll operates out of will end soon so the space will be turned into a full green space. On A Roll will end by March 31st. CCs Daiquiris will end in May. The building will be dismantled and repurposed at other locations. The Bullet will move out as well. A streetcar used on the Lighting Route from 1897 will move to the green space from the train shed to be displayed. The green space was part of the masterplan from the downtown improvement study several years ago.

On A Roll will likely continue as a food truck. The owners of the The Bullet are working on their next phase. Not sure what CCs will do after the move.
