I had no idea how flat the land around this was, and by flat I mean lacking any other buildings/development. It's literally a building growing out of a desert. I'm sure someone's said this before but this building feels like a metaphor for the income inequality in Saudi Arabia: everything's desolate except for that one spot in the middle.

It seems comparable with the footprint of the Burj Khalifa.
But as there is nothing in the surroundings to act as a reference, it is difficult to estimate the actual size. It must be enormous...

A little bit. I'm not normally rude, it's just that I've followed the entire construction of the Burj Khalifa and have been following this tower for some time now as well, and as a result have had to read far too many posts about how said tower is being built "in the middle of the desert" (which isn't even entirely true), how the money being spent on it could be put to better use, and so on and on. I've just lost patience at this point.

Agree.

In the "Western" world many people still think that the highest building on the planet can only stand in NYC.
Now that most supertalls are being built in other countries than the USA, many try to put that thought away.

Why can many still not accept that Far East and Middle East countries are also full worthy members of the world society, also have their dreams, and also spend money?
And do that in their own way...? Nothing wrong with that!

i think that it is a bold statement to build such a thing in the desert. very cool. anytime a new tallest is built i am all for it. i love the way they build skyscrapers in the near east. screw all the naysayers. they suck. lol

I am a resident of New York, and I agree with this statement 100 percent.

I am very interested in the development of other countries, especially supertalls. It gives a new face to emerging countries ready to contest in supertall development, as well as a lot of new eye candy when I go to visit. Looking forward to seeing this one rise.

I'm from the US and lived in NYC for 12 years and I agree that there is far too much negativity regarding this and other supertall projects in the Middle East. The bias of many posters is extremely obvious. I can't imagine they would denigrate the Kingdom Tower or Burj Khalifa if they were being built in their own cities. In fact, I can imagine they would praise them to the heavens. Instead, because they are being built in the desert, anyone viewing these threads is subjected to a lot of posts about how inappropriate the project is for reasons that are usually clearly beyond the scope of the interests and expertise of the vast majority of this community. Often, it devolves into a sociopolitical argument about what is best for the Arabian people, as if any of us know what is. Let's keep the thread about the construction of the tower!

Well said sir.

I am a life long NYC area resident, and this will be and the Burj Khalifa is easily two of my favorite towers. I for one do not care where they are built, as long as buildings keep getting bigger and bigger and drop my jaw with different style I am a happy person. All of the supertalls being built today are a win for the architecture community.

Really? I love the Kingdom Tower design, but the Burj Khalifa? I dunno. BOA tower in New York has a way better design in my opinion, as well as many others. Keep in mind I am not from the East coast, so I don't find my opinion very biased

I could not find a completion date for this tower. Does anyone know when they plan to complete this?

A total construction time of 65 months was once claimed, resulting in a completion in 2018.

(The start date of April 27th 2014 is correct).
But I think they are not gonna make "2018" happen...
I would eat my hat, if I had one!

(note: The above link is not the officlal KT website as far as I know.
Does anybody know if there is one?)

I apologize if this has been asked in this thread recently (it wasn't in the last few pages at least), but what are the chances that this actually gets built, and to the height that they say it will? Is it looking likely? Or do we just not know for sure yet?

Well it's under construction already, so I'd assume it will be finished and to the latest designs...

There's a lot of projects, especially skyscrapers, that begin construction but never finish as originally intended.
