Robba da Matti is closing their Kits location, odd considering how much money they just spent renovating it.

Meanwhile the main Heirloom on 12th at Granville has now announced they're closing. They always seemed busy.

In a follow up to the Donnelly Group restructuring, "Justice Shelley C. Fitzpatrick declined to order the assignment of Cinema Public House Ltd.'s lease of its restaurant space to new corporate owners, citing the City of Vancouver's concerns about uncertain funding and a lack of industry expertise on the part of the would-be buyers of the business." I had no idea the city owned that! Do they own other properties along the strip (other than the Orpheum)?

It's owned as non-market housing. I think the City own one other non-market building on Granville. You can see City-owned property on VanMap. There are other non-market buildings on Granville owned by other agencies.

What's with the prominent vegetarian restaurant closings lately? Furst Heirloom and now the Arbor:

The Arbor on Main Street is Closing Doors This April
By Michelle Sproule — Managing Editor, Food & Culture Writer and From-The-Hip Picture-Taker
Mar 19, 2024

Co-owners of The Arbor – Scott Lewis, Shira Blustein and Paul McCloskey – announced today that their popular casual vegetarian restaurant, which has been a fixture in Mount Pleasant for almost eight years, is closing doors on April 7th.

Since taking over the space at 3941 Main St. back in 2016, The Arbor has served numerous Southern Fried Artichoke Sandwiches, won many awards, and advanced British Columbia’s vegetarian culinary identity by living by their motto “real food for comfort”, and setting an example for showcasing and celebrating local ingredients, practicing sustainable sourcing, and making nourishing food easy and accessible....

Didn't Heirloom already dump their vegetarian concept before they closed?

Maybe people are realizing that they can cook their own vegetarian meals at home at lower cost.

Yes but I'd wager that was a last ditch attempt to boost business. I was surprised as it always seemed busy in there and though not a vegetarian myself I'd always enjoyed their meals.

Once Heirloom stopped being vegetarian, lots of vegetarians stopped eating there. (They still seem to be open, too).

Arbor is vegetarian (with vegan food too), but MeeT (located very close to Arbor) is only vegan, and has added two more locations. Acorn (Arbor's fancier, older sibling) is still operating. Costs of materials (especially vegan alternate proteins) have risen a lot; even chains are substituting cheaper alternates. Tap & Barrel only have a falafel burger as veggie alternate now for example.

Apparently half of restaurants in Canada, (and possibly more in Vancouver), are losing money. There will probably be a lot more closures - vegetarian or otherwise.

Food costs are getting very expensive, where I work and they have changed a lot of ingredients to cheaper options while keeping the same price and things we made in house are outsourced as they are cheaper that way.
