My Arena prediction:

1. UT will decide they want an arena all to themselves and want it sooner rather than later, and will find a place on campus to cram in it. Their money, their choice, they'll get it done by the time the Erwin Center faces the wrecking ball.

2. City of Austin voters will reject any attempt to build a public sports arena to replace the civic function the Erwin Center used to have, especially one that would have no tenants to start with.

3. Private investors and a suburban city like Buda or Georgetown will then build some kind "Entertainment District" out in a greenfield location along I-35 or 130. An Arena mostly for traveling events like concerts or maybe minor league hockey with ~15,000 seats, that will anchor a cheesy outdoor mall filled with chain bars and restaurants like Hard Rock Cafe and the whole thing will have a captive customer base and produce lots of sales tax revenue.

4. Not long after, Austin residents will wish the city had its venue closer to downtown and get the ball rolling on some ambitious expensive proposal.

I think UT would want to partner with the city on a nice stadium but the 10-1 council will never go for it. You're right. They will build a smaller arena on campus and Austin might lose out on some tour dates from various artists/wwe. I'm not sure there will be a market for an arena outside the city. There is already the cedar park center and COTA. Arenas are very rarely built outside of the city limits and many of them are near city downtowns. You would have to go back a while to find an NBA arena built in a neighboring city/ far suburb I believe.

Plans for Brackenridge hospital site entering second phase

Oct 10, 2014, 2:53pm CDT

Chad Swiatecki
Staff Writer-
Austin Business Journal

Central Health officials will hold a public meeting in Austin in November to hear public input and proposals on the next use for the 14-acre site of the University Medical Center Brackendridge campus downtown. The Brackenridge hospital will be decommissioned in 2017 when the new Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas is completed.

A mixed-use development is all but certain for the site, with uses that complement the new Dell Medical School and the new hospital as a priority. That use will be intended in part to mirror the effect of the medical and business interplay in the Mission Bay area of San Francisco that was redeveloped around the University of California San Francisco.

It looks like the first of the eight cranes went up at the medical center site in the ABJ photo:

So that's some vertical construction on the hospital with those columns going up.

If you're coming west on MLK east of I-35, there's a nice view of these from the I-35 access intersection. I saw two of them up the other night and I was trying to count, but I couldn't quite make out how many there were at the time. I'd love to see the view from Disch-Falk Field.

Expect a roadshow soon for the 'next big thing in downtown Austin'
Nov 8, 2014, 12:00pm CST

Chad Swiatecki
Staff Writer-
Austin Business Journal

Business leaders and entrepreneurs will have lots of chances to weigh in and get their voices heard when it comes to the fate of the University Medical Center Brackenridge campus downtown, which is slated to be redeveloped after a new community hospital under construction nearby is complete.

At present the plan for the property is to make it a mixed-use site combining residential, office and retail as well as a connection to health care since the property will be in the immediate vicinity of the under-construction Dell Medical School at the University of Texas.

The cranes are visible here from I-35 at Woodland in South Austin. Taken on Saturday, 11/8.

The crane action driving south through downtown has gotten pretty sweet since so many of the cranes are close to I-35.

Hmm. The Lege is looking to put a collar on UT to avoid another Wallace Hall fiasco, according to the Statesman and Texas Monthly. Interesting bit of legislation buried in the bill that will affect the construction of the UT System HQ, quoted below. This could get complicated.

Quote:
In addition to the obvious attempt at preventing another rebel like Hall asking questions, the provision, “tucked hundreds of pages into the House budget would bar the UT System from spending money on a 19-story, $133.1 million headquarters building without approval from a group of lawmakers who oversee the budget.” That one’s particularly awkward since the headquarters is already being built.
