Zaza and 70 Rainey are competing for last to top out. However, its good to see any progress after the long wait. Btw, is that a ramp on the northwest corner? It looks like they are working on a level of parking above ground. I thought all the parking was going to be below ground...that would explain why its taking so long to finish that floor. It requires more reinforced cement to handle the weight of all the vehicles.

This is going to be a close "race". I give the edge to Zaza just becasue it's shorter.

Slightly OT: Note that concrete poured in the SE corner of Republic Park.

I've got it!

I bet most of the crew is building BOTH towers at the same time! Going back and forth like maybe ZaZa in the morning and Rainey in the afternoon.

Hopefully they don't mix up the plans as they're going back and forth so often....that'd be awkward...

In that photo, the spaces in the building(s) on the southwest corner of 5th and Lavaca have been empty for quite a while now. I get the feeling that they are being shopped around for redevelopment.
I have no evidence to back that up, but it could explain why such prime real estate has been empty for so long.

It's the one by the crane, not the eyesore in the foreground

Is that the old Miller Blueprint in the foreground? What are they doing to that building?

Wasn't there a hotel proposed for that lot? I can't remember any more.

This has stuck in my head for weeks now. I drive in to work on 5th and pass some of those empty contiguous storefronts. A whole lotta nothin' going on with them, which makes me think your hunch is correct. Bundle 'em together and you've got a quarter of a city block with no CVC encumbrance.

there was indeed a hotel proposed for the empty lot.

The re-do of millers is a bowling alley/ bar.... or at least that was what
we originally reported.

The hotel was/is indeed for the adjacent lot. It's owned by IBC Bank and has been speculated as ~30 story hotel. A Michael Hsu rendering surfaced for a 35-story hotel/condo a couple years ago and that jibes with the most recent site plan I remember. Seems like more of a vision at the moment though. The other property is going to be a Goodnight bowling alley/movie theater if I recall correctly.

I'm sure glad that there adding better sidewalk. Now if they can do something about the birds that reek havoc to anyone who walks by there. I personally disliked walking or going anywhere near those trees right in front of the old Blueprint building as I got crapped on by some birds years ago. Still to this day I avoid traveling down that sidewalk.

You do know that getting crapped on by a bird(s) is good luck

Well, hell, then I should have good luck then. It's happened to me twice. Once by a seagull at the coast (on my head) - I had to wash my hair under a faucet at our camp site. The other time was on Congress Avenue at Cesar Chavez. I was waiting for the light to change while on my bike, and one let loose. It landed on my backpack.

Isn't this the location of Susan Sarandon's ping pong bar?

It's the two buildings on the SE corner of the 5th & Lavaca intersection next to the Lincoln Property office tower.
