I noticed they received a "B" grade from the health department - which is a GOOD thing, as many traditional Chinese preparations do not meet current health codes.

Another "old school" Chinese place is Paul's Kitchen on San Pedro around 11th or 12th st. I haven't been there in a few years (I hope they're still there). Walking in is a step back to the 1970's. They even have Pressed Duck on the menu!

While searching for more information on friction drive I happened upon an illustration of a chasis for a Cartercar. (I've never heard of a Cartercar)

Speaking of Culver City, is anyone familiar with "Hotel Lone Wolf?" This video purports to depict the back of that structure at or near 8874 Washington Blvd., circa 1924 from the Our Gang short "Fast Company." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5HIxn3Sx4w Perhaps the structure had different names, but in any event, it looks substantial enough to have warranted some NLA attention. No obvious CD listing.

A quick search revealed that BRR also mentioned a Wilshire Blvd. Piggly Wiggly and a La Brea Ave. Piggly Wiggly. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=7504


Page 2569 of the 1930 C.D. lists approximately two dozen PW's in the LA area, among them, locations at 245 N. Larchmont and another, very close to Wilshire and La Brea (5318 Wilshire).

Regarding the slide that features what appears to be one sign in front of another, I think that the "front" sign is a framing device and the "rear" sign is a recessed shadow box. They were common back then, if I am not mistaken. The angle the photo i taken from seems to be an optical illusion.

The billboard location can be seen on the left of this 1956 image. My guess would be that the extra sign was a shaped item standing out from the main billboard. The bottle on the board below may have stood out in the same way.

Thanks, good find. Someone always sleuths out these things on "Noirish L.A." no matter how obscure. So, the L.A. area was blessed (?) by PWs. I don't remember them (born in '52) so they must have been uncommon or gone by the late 1950s/early 1960s, or maybe not in the SF Valley, where I spent most of my larval stage. I remember the Richfield tower in all it's glory, and Brew 102 and the giant gasometer towers, and smog alerts (gasp) and bomb drop drills (double gasp) and the old gothic Hall of Records and Pacific Ocean Park ("POP") and "77 Sunset Strip" and "Father Knows Best" and "Leave It To Beaver" and "My 3 Sons" ("Chip" went to my high school in NoHo) and "Dobie Gillis" and beatniks and juvenile delinquents with switch blades and leather jackets and all the girls in pony tails and we boys in crew cuts and Davy Crockett raccoon caps and Chinese eateries that served chop suey and egg foo young and angry Hop Sing on "Bonanza" yelling at Hoss and Elvis was King and Marilyn M. was Queen but I don't remember Piggly Wigglies. A blank spot in my neural net. The pork products must have been especially choice at Piggly Ws.
