Since 1999 I've lived in the 'old' Old Fourth Ward, south of John Lewis Freedom Pkwy in the MLKjr Historic District & I have seen MANY changes. This video is amazing but the absence of the historic district of the Old Fourth Ward in the video really drives home for me the neighborhood is two very different neighborhoods now. The shape of it has always been awkward given that it goes all the way from Dekalb Ave on its south side up to North Avenue on its north side and sandwiched between Boulevard & the Beltline rails. It was destined to split. Should the two be called Fourth Ward collectively and New Fourth Ward north of Freedom and Old Fourth Ward south of Freedom??? Just drop the word Old from the park??? Redefining and splitting larger less dense neighborhoods into higher density smaller neighborhoods is a consequence of our ever evolving & population growing city.

Technically the Southern Company HQ at Ralph McGill and Piedmont is O4W too!

Agree it's a super bizarre neighborhood. At this point O4W is basically three distinct neighborhoods:
- South of Freedom Parkway
- North of Freedom Parkway/East of Glen Iris
- North of Freedom Parkway/West of Glen Iris

By the time you get west of Central Park Place you're basically in SoNo.

They have been calling the Old Fourth Ward south of Freedom "Sweet Auburn" for a while. The Civic Center side of O4W used to be called Bedford-Pine. Maybe they should bring that name back.

Only a small part of the O4W neighborhood south of Freedom is in the Sweet Auburn District. The easiest way to look at it is neighborhood verse district; the district being a rare overlay historic district that has historic guideline rules that the rest of the neighborhoods it cuts across do not have to follow. My house falls within the district so my home has to follow all the historic guidelines yet the homes across the street do not since they are out of the district.

Two new developments in the area demonstrate this well. Waldo's is further south in O4W but not in the Sweet Auburn District so they cleared the block of all buildings to create a clean slate to develop. Front Porch is in the Sweet Auburn District and that project includes the restoration of other buildings on the block. Both will be great additions to the city.

The Bedford-Pine name is kinda tainted by its association with the buildings run by Wingate properties.
