I drove by this place yesterday on Valley Blvd. near Garfield in Alhambra.
It looks like it was an old fast-food hamburger joint. Does anyone know the history of it?
Currently it is a seafood place called the Boat House.

Thirty years ago The HAT had great food. In 2014 its owned by new people and food is bland in comparison to the glory days. The name is still there but the good food has departed.

Lemster2024 and I have been wondering about this place too! The Alhambra Historical Society has been closed the last few times Lemster2024 went there so we would appreciate any assistance. The building resembled a Schriver's drive in restaurant
Also in reference to a previous post (I can't seem to find it now), there was a Paul's Cafe on San Julian and I believe 10th near Louie Produce in the City Market Complex. I was quite young at the time, but I think it mostly catered to the workers of the City Market so I am not surprised that "chau-shu" pork was served since many were Chinese.

Thanks bigHen, for the info on Paul's Cafe. Yes, it was mainly produce workers eating there. It was always crowded and we usually ate with the cooks in the kitchen, one I remember was "Slim" who usually made me the best sandwich of them all. After getting a crate of tomatoes, sack of onions and a rack of Gordon's bread and a sandwich it was off to Carnation for a big container of Ice Cream then to Van de Kamps for a container of cookies. All this went into the large freezer in the garage for later use except the produce that is. My father liked to shop in bulk you might say. He also had a friend with a Pheasant Farm and we ate a lot of that, so much even the dog ate some. i wish I could eat like that now.

After Bunker Hill (GW) and Ferguson Alley (suggested by me #11 372), I guess Bruce you pointed a third "epicenter" of noir : East 5th. This post (at Wall Street and 5th looking East) remembered me a line in "The Blue Dahlia" (1946) (Alan Ladd & Veronica Lake). At 23:30 in the movie, a suspicious character named Leo says to Eddie Harwood (the bad character owner of the Blue Dahlia nightclub) :"Quinlan was bumped off a few nights ago over on East 5th".
I had previously posted this small 1969 photo which had lighted and unlighted signs for The Phone Booth Restaurant, which, however, was primarily a strip club.

Although it predate classic 'noir' by twenty years, I find it similarly mystifying.
I realize the clues are sparse, but I'd love to figure out where this was taken.
...and here's a second photograph by the same photographer (also from the 1920s).
-could this provide some additional clues?

Sorry, E_R, I don't know how to post a Google Maps picture on the thread. I checked your photo on Google Maps and I recognized the beautiful Andrew Brown Building which is still there (first on the right on the noirish photo) by its emergency stairs and the windows at the second floor. I recognized the next building too. The rest (particularly on the left) has changed. We are at Wall Street and 5th looking to 5th Street to the East.
