sigh.......i can't believe that all the links to photos that i posted yesterday are now unavailable due to USC's site being down for maintenance..........

hopefully the site will be back up soon, and the pictures will re-appear. could also possibly signal that they are updating the library, (which would be fantastic), hopefully it doesn't mean that they are re-organizing all the files, which would render all of our links to photographs there over the past two years moot.

****Update****
i was able to recover the images from the cache in my office computer, so i was able to upload them to flickr, and then replace the USC Digital Archive URL with the new flickr URL, so the photographs appear once more.

from now on, all images that i find, i will upload them to flickr before posting here, to insure that the images stay put, even if the original site is down.

I'm glad your photos are back up gsjansen.
I thought the only way to post photographs was through a photo hosting site (I use imageshack).
I'm curious, how were you doing it before?

And like you said, I hope they're adding new photographs. Wouldn't that be great!

typically when i find photos on lapl or usc, i just right click on the photograph and select copy image location, then i copy that into the insert photo box. obviously, i will be (as i said before), uploading the photos on flickr prior to posting here.

That City Hall photo with the windows lit up as a cross is kind of spooky for some reason. It must have been a very different political vibe at that point in time. Hard to imagine that happening today. Then again, maybe not.

I learned that from a while ago when I first started posting pictures from the USC archive that the site does go down; in fact when I first posted from that site, within a few days it went down because of a problem or maintenance or whatever, so that's when I started just saving the pictures to my computer and then uploading them to imageshack.

The USC archive has been pretty good for a bit, it seems that the website hasn't gone down in a while, but I guess it was down yesterday. Incidentally, right now it's back up.

Great photos btw, gsjansen.

some interesting photographs from life magazine between the years of 1949 and 1958

looking south on flower and figueroa from across sunset boulevard 1958. if you look at the lower left of the photograph, you can see the buildings on the south side of sunset between fig and grand who's demise Beaudry had posted a page ago or so about

looking west across figueroa at the start of construction of the stack interchange between the hollywood, arroyo seco, and harbor freeways 1949. once again, the sunset block between fig and grand is visible in the lower right

looking north on figueroa at rush hour traffic at the intersection of sunset boulevard 1949

looking north across 6th street of at the harbor freeway construction 1953

looking east during construction of the 101 arroyo seco parkway from figueroa 1949. the old school building is still standing and is visible on the left side of the photograph

Here's the same intersection on April 11, 2010. The old library building has since been replaced with a Craftsman-themed, larger library structure.

I think it's great that the brown stone staircase at the extreme right has survived after all these years.
But I have to mourn the loss of the neo-classical beauty of the original library. It seemed so perfectly situated on that small parcel of land.

No information or date given....but it certainly looks like a grand opening of one of the tunnels.
It's the first time that I've noticed a clock embedded in the archway.

After further study of the above photo....I believe it is the Hill Street entrance to the Second Street tunnel.
The apartment building with the arched windows matches the above photo. The embedded clock doesn't seem to be embedded after all.

Here it is under construction in 1920.

Mush — sometimes called coosh — is a thick cornmeal pudding (or porridge) usually boiled in water or milk. It is often then fried after being cut up into flat squares or rectangles. Usage is especially common in the eastern and southeastern United States. It is also customary for those in the Midwestern US to eat it with maple syrup.

Another example, I suppose, of just how Midwestern LA was 90 years ago.

A few pages back there were some great photos of houses being moved....and even an entire apartment building, in three sections, if I recall.

And a couple months ago a spectacular series about one of the early LA schools being moved. The mover ran out of money, and there the school sat, high on its stilts for a while before finally reaching its destination.

So.................

What ever happened to house moving? You NEVER hear of anything like this anymore. Least not around these parts.

I can only assume it must be a cost issue, considering any tractors and other vehicles one would need to do the moving are 10 times better than they were in, say, 1920. Plus a lot of utilities are underground.

Great series! I especially like this aerial view, as it clearly shows Court Circle (left), which was obliterated by the construction of the Harbor Freeway. Does anybody have any specific information about the history of Court Circle, or even better, pictures of it in its heyday?
