Gatherings and Protests

Figured I'd start a thread since putting these in Downtown Updates kind of clogs that thread.

Protesters against the regime in Iran were out in force today.
Started from VAG, down to about QE Theatre, back on Robson St., then split at Howe to get back to VAG.
Some went south via Howe, Smithe and Hornby, the bulk went north on Howe.
So both Howe and Hornby were occupied for a while (4th pic).

Pics by me today.

Thanks for the photos. Unfortunately, tying up traffic here is not likely to help things in Iran very much.

At the very least local protests can aim to influence politics all the way up to the federal level and affect Canadian foreign policy towards Iran, however I don't know what more we can do beyond declaring war. I'm pretty sure we're already sanctioning the fuck out of Iran.

They've been protesting Iran pretty consistently.
Not sure how often, but maybe once a month?

It feels more like weekly on Saturdays, although maybe that has calmed down a bit.

We could sanction Iran a lot more. Look at Russia.

Unfortunately this stuff has to be settled from within the country. They are the closest they've been in a long time.

I don't know how much social media access there is inside Iran, but I imagine seeing regular protests across the globe in major cities also has a positive effect on Iranian protesters' moral.

I think there's at least some gathering at the VAG every Saturday, but the size of the crowd varies significantly. Some weeks the entire square is full and some weeks only a small space in front of the VAG steps is occupied.

I have to say, seeing these Iran protests contrasted against vaccine protests that sometimes occur elsewhere around Robson Square often on the same days really makes it clear what "freedom" and "tyranny" actually mean.
