As far as I know, it's not possible to delete a post, only its contents (I dare say that the site admins could do it).

Don't forget that you can edit a post as often as you like, so there's no need to add extra posts. Why not find something else interesting to post about and edit it into your deleted post .

Correct Hoss. But in spite of all that, many of my posts have been deleted by someone. Maybe it was Oliver...seen below.>>>

Here are two 'trick' photographs that I don't believe we have seen.

old file / CALIFBOY101 flickr

As you can see, by looking at the background, the two ladies are on Santa Monica beach.

Pretty good trick!

Thank you for your fast response. You are right. If VBulletin does not allow us to delete, posting something else would work.

Thanks for posting those images of Main Street Gym #2, e_r. Here is another (undated) shot:

Main Street Gym #2 was at 318-1/2 S. Main Street, in the (1911?) Adolphus Theatre building:

California State Library

Here is the same building in 1974, with "MAIN STREET GYM" in the second-floor windows. The parking entrance is at center
under the old theater marquee; the gym entrance is just to the left of that and to the right of the MEXICO LUGGAGE sign:

00015199 at LA Public Library

The November 13, 1952, Los Angeles Times notes that "The new Olympic gym opened its doors last week at 318 1/2 S Main St."
The 1956 LA Street Address Directory lists the Olympic Gym at that address, but there are a couple Times references in 1959 to
the Main Street Gym, and by 1960 the name had officially changed.

The poster on the right is from 1969, so let's assume the photo below is from that year as well. On the awning you can still see
the P and the C from the old Olympic Gym days:

00028199 at LA Public Library

The October 5, 1970, Daily Trojan has an article on the Main Street Gym, including information on the original location. The article
has photos of the gym and its owner, Howie Steindler. The Times ran a long article on the gym on February 26, 1976, which included
e_r's 1976 photo above; the text of the article's first page is below:

ProQuest via LA Public Library

On Wednesday evening, March 9, 1977, Howie Steindler was murdered in the back seat of his own automobile:

March 11, 1977, Los Angeles Times at ProQuest via LA Public Library

Sportswriter Jim Murray wrote about Steindler the same day:

March 11, 1977, Los Angeles Times at ProQuest via LA Public Library

On February 15, 1978, the Times reported that Steindler's widow had received his wallet in the mail the previous December.
However, the case is still unsolved.

Steindler's daughter Carol ran the gym until the Adolphus Theatre building was torn down in late 1984. She then operated
another "Main Street Gym" behind the Olympic Auditorium for a short time until that gym was also demolished.

Thank you FW for the C O R R E C T I O N.

I had completely forgotten about the 2nd location in the Adolphus Theatre building.

Opened as the Panorama* Theater, it became the Adolphus Theater from November 27, 1911 when it was taken over by Adolph Ramash after alterations had been made to the plans of architectural firm Mayberry & Parker. Seating was provided for 1,450, all on a single level together with 12 seats in each of the single boxes located at the side of the proscenium. The stage was 50ft deep. It was the largest of the theatres on Main Street in the downtown area of Los Angeles. In 1913 a 700-seat balcony was added, with plans provided by architect Otto Janssen and it reopened as the Hippodrome Theatre on August 31, 1913.

After closing, the auditorium was demolished in September & October 1952 and the space used for parking. The front of the building remained for many years, housing a gymnasium. It, too, has been demolished.

*The Panorama was originally a skating rink?

And what does "Jiggs" have to do with the photo?

This is the only Jiggs I know.

Cheetah's real name was Jiggs. At least 'original' Cheetah's (Cheeta) was.

I wonder how Cheetah's backhand was?

It only makes sense that there was one on Catalina as well.

Does anyone know the address of the one in Avalon? (I believe the address is hidden behind the matches)

Thx Kitty.

Here's another place I don't recall.

It has a fancy schmancy cut-out. ooh la la

EBAY

And, what appears to be, a tree growing through the canopy. (hmmm...unless the canopy is detached from the building) ...enquiring minds want to know. ; >)

As you can see, it also has a very cool martini glass printed on the matches.

enigmatic mystery location.

"Dance Party LA 1923."

DENSHO

Caption on reverse: "Little Tokyo, Los Angeles 1923. 'Dance Party.'

Caption by Ike Hatchimonji I believe he is the person the arrow is pointing to.

Unless I'm mistaken, the photograph was taken on the upper floor of an old house in 'Little Tokyo'.

Photographer: Ninomiya L.A.

Does anyone idea where this might have been taken?

...or know where Ike Hatchimonji lived around 1923? Of course this location isn't necessarily his home. (but it would be a good place to start searching)

The place of business may have been in a deviding line for toll calls. If you lived in one area a BR may be a toll call and vice versa even though you were very close by.

I've been working in Toluca Lake recently, and noticed this building. It kinda reminds my of the old Ralph's supermarkets, with the rotunda and spanish tile roof, not to mention the rooftop sign.

The building is located at 10155 Riverside Drive, Toluca Lake.

Does anyone have the original picture of this Ralph's location (or not)?

Your wish is my command, e_r:

LA Times of 6/4/1970 via ProQuest via CSULB Library.

El Galleon is at 411 Crescent Avenue (alias Front Street), as it happens adjacent to a hotel I've frequently stayed at . . . "my" room's window is consequently close by, and I get to "enjoy" the karaoke in abundance.

Virtual reality recreation of the Garden of Allah

Check out this startlingly realistic image of the Garden of Allah's main building. It was made by Kevin Kerber as part of a restoration project in which he is re-creating (from scratch!) public places and film sets and other environments around Hollywood and Los Angeles as part, I believe, of a virtual reality project he's working on.

He did one of Ciro's, too.

He has a Facebook page

Ah, front strike matchbooks:

https://www.picclickimg.com/d/l400/p...GROVE-FULL.jpg

You could (at some risk to your thumb) strike a match one-handed with one of those. Like many young bucks of the 50's, I spent hours learning to do that. Very convenient when lighting a young lady's cigarette, left one hand free for, er, emergencies.

Then the Feds outlawed them:

https://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/08/m...matchbook.html

Cheers,

Earl
