The permit says the building was built without the benefit of an architect or engineer. The owner was also the contractor. The RE companies say the building got a major renovation in 1956, but there's no permit for that.

There's a few examples of items from the Crenshaw Pottery Company AKA Crenshaw of California on Etsy and eBay:

Thx Earl. I'll read it. Another rabbit hole to fall into :-)

edit:

...OK, I read Ed King's "I Know Who Killed Desmond Taylor" and that was almost too much. Taylor's brother was interesting though.

I don't think we've seen this image of a Dolores drive-in at Sepulveda and Washington-- looks like it might have been another chain's outlet at some point. Albertson's Oldsmobile next door (4114 Sepulveda)--including its rocket-- was there until recently.

Anyone know where the rocket might have gone?

I want to say the Rocket was there until last year. This dealership had a nice 47 Olds Woodie around 2000/01.. I use to work at Allied Model Trains further down the road, and would walk past it everyday.I think this is a starbucks now. As far as Dolores.. Im pretty sure they were a decent size chain, the last one i know of is on Santa Monica Blvd in WLA..when i was going to High School we would go to Dolores after a play performance( circa 97-00), the food cost the same as DuPars, and tasted like Norms..I like Norms, I like DuPars pies...but Dolores....

This article is about the closure of the Dolores Drive-In at Wilshire and La Cienega. It's from the October 2, 1980 edition of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

news.google.com

The restaurant obviously survived into 1981, because that's when KNBC TV interviewed loyal customers having their "last meal". One arrived in a chauffeur driven Mercedes, while another left their VW Thing parked outside.

Here's the first 'mystery' location of 2016.

Another unique use of I-beams. (I'm anxious to see if they're still standing)

It's too bad there isn't a name on that pastrami shop. (and I can't read the round sign in the distance)
If you look closely at the right edge of the slide, there's a slight elevation with a picket fence running up the rise.

Joie Chitwood's Auto Dare Devils at the Culver City Stadium, circa 1950.

old file / eBay

http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2...d-a-rare-find/

Unless I'm mistaken, the Culver City Stadium was the second race track in Culver City.

"The 1/5th mile track was built in 1932 by the Culver City Kennel Club for Greyhound races. (but anti-gambling legislation closed it in 1934!)
The property was sold to Douglas Aircraft in 1954, which later built a plant and office building."

below: As a reminder, (and because this illustration is so damn cool) here's the first Culver City Speedway, which we've covered numerous times on NLA.

Good news! Those I-beams are still standing as part of this car wash on W Florence, just east of Crenshaw.

GSV

The apartment building on Crenshaw is also still standing, I just couldn't get a view of it with the car wash in the foreground.

I've been trying to figure out where in Los Angeles this photograph was taken.

Here is the information that was included on the back of the race photograph.

It could be Wilshire, as that's where this picture I posted nearly a year ago was taken. It seems to be the same cars in a different order. My original post also has a "now" view.

I thought the building (in my pic) might be the Ambassador Hotel but it seemed too close to the street. (at first I thought it was the Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica)

KevinW posted this aerial view of the track, which was on the north side of Washington, just east of
Lincoln (the wide curved street at left):

Thanks FW.

I was surprised to find yet another slide that shows triangular I-beam construction.

eBay

I was having trouble figuring out the location until a second slide popped up on eBay. (below)

Believe it or not, the Taco House still stands! (& is still in business)

The sign says Taco House #1, so I take it there are numerous locations.

The Rapp Saloon has only been mentioned once before on NLA (but no photograph)

I found this image from a 1985 calendar.

Good news...it was saved! Today, the old Rapp Saloon stands in front of a hostel & next to an Italian restaurant.

'mystery' location.

eBay

At first glance I thought that 'cupola' was on top of the bank, but it belongs to the building next door.

Not too many clues in this 'mystery' slide.

eBay

-Any idea where this desolate corner was located? (I'm sure it's built up by now)

Good luck sleuthing.

The Dobson & Co building was at 2627 Clarendon Avenue, Huntington Park. It's no longer standing, but the old Community Bank at 2629 is still there. A quick Google suggests it's now the San Antonio Mental Health Center, but there's no signage to back this up.

GSV

The building with the tower is around the corner on Rita Avenue. There's a sign over the door at the base of the tower (hidden by the bush in this image) which says Baptist Day School. The sign facing Clarendon Street says First Baptist Church.

The Rapp Saloon, at 1438 Second St., was built in 1875 and is the oldest surviving brick building in the city. This one-story structure was designed for William Rapp by a contractor known only as Mr. Freeman. The building was constructed by Spencer & Pugh bricklayers and plasterers. It was the first masonry structure in Santa Monica. An 1877 advertisement in the Santa Monica Outlook called the establishment the “Los Angeles Beer Garden” with “fresh-tapped Los Angeles beer always on hand.”

Over the years, the property has had a variety of purposes, including a Salvation Army meeting hall, radiator repair shop, art gallery and storage facility for the Vitagraph Film Co.. Founded in 1911, Vitagraph Film Co. was one of the first movie studios in the Los Angeles area. The Rapp Saloon even served as Santa Monica’s City Hall for two years, and was the city's first landmark. http://www.santamonicalandmarks.com/...28.htmlhttp://

Official Map No. 4, Los Angeles City, November 17, 1868

The 1868 Map No. 4 showing the Stone Quarry Hills and the four main ravines which would become Elysian Park. From the east they are/were Solano, Cemetery, Sulphur and Chavez.
Solano, a well defined water-course which emptied into the Los Angeles River watershed, has been the location of city reservoirs from a very early time although
here a small reservoir is shown at the mouth of Cemetery Ravine slightly east of the actual cemetery. Chavez would become...well you know.
The Roman Catholic Cemetery would ultimately become the athletic fields of Cathedral High School where the student body calls itself the 'Phantoms'.

Call So Cal Auto Club on Figueroa.

Unscheduled pit stop? Either this Franklin needs a "cow catcher" to avoid Wishire Blvd. road hazards - or this light model tourer is becoming even lighter by jettisoning parts. Time to trade up to a 1910 model?
