Sadly, one of Manitoba/North Dakota's better known towers is about to come down... the Peace Tower at the International Peace Gardens. It's falling apart so it will have to be replaced. I'll miss it, I always thought it looked good.

I hope they replace them. Peace Gardens flys under the radar IMO, they are surrounded by Turtle Mts (lol). Lots of great camping, fishing and hiking. If you have a kid, the Legion runs a awesome sports camp there as well.

MANITOBA GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES DISSOLUTION OF EAST SIDE ROAD AUTHORITY
– – –
Integration Will Ensure Centralized Co-ordination of Infrastructure Projects: Pedersen

In accordance with commitments made by Manitoba’s new government, the East Side Road Authority (ESRA) will be dissolved and its mandate repatriated to Manitoba Infrastructure, Infrastructure Minister Blaine Pedersen announced today.

“The integration of the East Side Road Authority’s mandate into Manitoba Infrastructure will bring about efficiencies while ensuring centralized co-ordination of all provincial infrastructure projects,” said Pedersen. “This move aligns with our government’s commitment to achieving value for money in the delivery of government services.”

Effective May 30, Lance Vigfusson, deputy minister of Manitoba Infrastructure, will be appointed acting chief executive officer of ESRA.

“Mr. Vigfusson has a mandate to operate on a ‘business-as-usual’ basis, while establishing an integration plan that will include consultation and regular communication with all impacted stakeholders,” the minister said.

Completely agree with cutting things like the above. No need to have a road authority to oversee construction of a gravel road. All the Floodway authority commie's went over there after the expansion was complete.

That would be nice to see a drive-in theatre for Regina again, as the article, near the end, has indicated as a possibility. Where would they locate?

Killarney Manitoba Drive In smashed by high winds.

CBC story:

The owners just purchased a new digital projector and vow to rebuild. The 50+ year old hydro poles that supported the screen just couldn't take it anymore.

Big news for the Brandon Shoppers Mall. Goodlife Fitness is moving into the former Safeway location. Sobey's is moving from their smaller store across 18th Street to the former Target location. Several new CARA restaurants as well, including East Side Mario's, Fionn MacCool's, Harvey's and Swiss Chalet.

Global Says it will be Manitoba's first East Side Mario's Location, however East Side Mario had a location at the former Gio's in Winnipeg.

New five-screen theatre for downtown

Magic Lantern Theatres purchases King Street Station

Jayne Foster, Staff Reporter / Battlefords News-Optimist
July 12, 2016 03:50 PM

Quote:
A five-screen movie theatre will be opening in downtown North Battleford, it was announced Tuesday. Bob Evans, director of development for Magic Lantern Theatres, was on the site for an announcement by the City of North Battleford, saying it could be open "within the year, probably within 10 months." At a cost of upwards of $5 million, the 690-seat theatre will be located on the so-called King Street Station property, adjacent to the liquor store, an area City Hall has been trying to develop for decades. Magic Lantern, with corporate headquarters in Edmonton and a reputation for family-friendly facilities, has purchased the land from the City. Evans listed the attributes of the planned theatre. "You will have a five-screen, stadium-seating, state-of-the-art multiplex theatre. We'll bring you all the first run movies, we'll be able to hold over more movies for you, it'll have state-of-the-art sound, high back chairs, recliners and, of course, good old-fashioned pop and popcorn." It will also feature digital projection and digital sound. "Everything that Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary [have], you'll have it right here in North Battleford,” said Evans. Magic Lantern Theatres currently operates nine cinema locations with 36 screens across Canada, including two cinemas under the Rainbow Cinemas banner. Evans expects North Battleford's multiplex could employ 30 or 40 part-time people and up to seven full-time, "depending on how we run the facility, which we haven't determined yet." He described the theatre as "perfect for this community," explaining the City of North Battleford came to Magic Lantern with the concept. "They came to us very convincingly. They had all the demographics that we needed," said Evans. "We just needed a reason to come, and the location is the reason, a perfect location."

This is rather good news for Downtown North Battleford!

My best friend lives halfway between Battleford and Lloyd so I go through there 6 or 7 times a year. On my way home I usually stop there for gas, maybe lunch. There's so much potential there. They've got this beautiful setting but so much of downtown is so run down. Hopefully a movie theatre will draw people in and act as a catalyst for some more development.

They were experiencing a mini oil boom there in the last few years but that has obviously petered out for now. Hopefully there is a comeback. A good crop this year should help.

The city's natural setting is rather incredible, but the city itself leaves much to be desired.

Doing a bit more reading on the subject, an earlier proposal from Magic Lantern was to build a smaller new theatre on the vacant site as well as fully restore the art deco Capitol Theatre that's kitty corner from there. Shame it didn't happen like that.

Further to the International Peace Garden, there is a great rundown of the submissions to replace the Peace Tower which was condemned due to deterioration.

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/opi...389382261.html

The submission which was chosen is Interwoven, by local architect Guy Prefontaine.

I think the concept and design are great, although personally I wish it could be a bit taller and grander in the same way that the Peace Tower was.

The Province has stepped up to support a new marine observatory in Churchill:

State-of-the-art Facility will Create Jobs,
Strengthen Local Economy: Wishart

Manitoba’s new government will provide up to $9 million to the University of Manitoba to support the construction of a new marine observatory in Churchill, Education and Training Minister Ian Wishart announced today.

“This project is an important part of our vision for a strong, diversified northern economy,” said Wishart. “The Churchill Marine Observatory will create up to 21 permanent jobs, boost tourism and transportation in the region and enhance Manitoba and Canada’s reputation as a world leader in Arctic research. In the short term, it will benefit the local economy by creating construction jobs.”

Once completed, the Churchill Marine Observatory will serve as a year-round hub for cutting-edge scientific research and technology development in the North, which will support ongoing environmentally responsible economic development in the North, Wishart said.

The minister noted the new state-of-the-art facility will also enhance Canada’s ability to monitor variability and change in nature, and ensure that governments and industry have the information needed to plan for and respond to economic development pressures throughout the Arctic.

“The University of Manitoba has recognized Arctic research as the one of the three signature research areas based on its global leadership,” said Digvir Jayas, vice-president (research and international) for the University of Manitoba. “The Churchill Marine Observatory will position Canada as a global leader of research and technological development in the areas of detection, impacts and mitigation of oil and contaminant spills in sea-ice covered waters. The research results will be adaptable to real-world scenarios in a variety of Arctic environments.”

Approximately 80 academics and students from the University of Manitoba and other universities in Canada, the United States and Europe are expected to visit the facility to conduct research each year and the facility will be available to industrial partners or other international institutes for research for approximately three weeks annually.

The minister noted these visitors will make use of local amenities such as hotels, restaurants and transportation (ground and air), providing support to the local economy.

“Our government will soon introduce a strategy that will focus on the north as a region with unique economic and social factors,” said Wishart. “Through diversification and strengthening linkages between communities, we will work together to build a northern economy that is dynamic and resilient, like the people who call the region their home.”

Manitoba’s northern economy relies significantly on ecotourism. The Churchill Marine Observatory will periodically open for tours and will add an exciting new attraction to the ecotourism landscape, the minister said.

“Manitoba’s north holds so much untapped potential,” said Wishart. “There is tremendous opportunity to grow tourism in the north and this facility will be an important part of the region for years to come.”
