Meanwhile, the suit and fancy hat business were booming.

I sometimes walk around at public events, such as Canada Day at the Forks, and look at all the crappy t-shirts and synthetic clothing everyone's wearing. Kind of a bummer when everyone used to look so sharp all the time. Lots of family pictures with Grandpa at the farm from the 50's, full on suit and tie out in the barn. These days going to the farm garners rubber boots and tattered clothing.

Yeah, we've gone a little too far with the super-casual look. It's practically jarring visiting a place where people still put some effort into their appearance. I remember walking by a high school in Paris and imagine my shock when there was not a single hoodie in sight anywhere

Really, if you were a grown man you wouldn't have had anything else to wear. I can't recollect my grandfather ever wearing anything but a suit ... maybe he didn't always have a tie on at the cottage but that was about as casual as it got. Casual clothing just didn't exist -- the one exception would be the clothing used in sports, notably golf (hence the still common use of the term "golf shirt" to mean a casual shirt).

Owning a Piece of Winnipeg History

http://winnipeg.ctvnews.ca/video?cli...ylistPageNum=1

The story is about several cement items from demolished historic buildings on sale.

Heritage Winnipeg has been storing the pieces outside in a farmer's field near Birds Hill Park.

And hence the small size of closets in older houses. If you weren't a professional you had your go to church suit and a few pairs of overalls with shirts and a porkpie hat. Not like now where some walk in closets are bigger than my bedroom

My father was born in 1912 and died in 1978 and I don't think I ever saw him in a pair of jeans or a t shirt. Always dark dress pants and a front button shirt with a collar. If he was going to Safeway or the bank he would always put a tie on.

^ Cool find. I wonder why Richardson ended up swapping the sites for the hotel and the Bank of Canada Building?

Stumbled upon this article. Interesting photos and cool seven and a half minute video at the end. Enjoy.

After seeing that render I wonder about that as well seeing that the views of the river and up Portage would have been nicer.

It is the actual rendering that caught my eye. I recognized it as a Brian Robinson rendering. He was the "Go To" guy for presentation renderings in the 1960's, 70's and into the early '80's. All the big firms of the time used him for their formal presentation work. Haven't seen his work in a long time!

You're sighing over the loss of Long John Silver's? That's all on Lloyd Axworthy with his "Window Park"...

Nice photos! That guy's account has some real gems. A lot of old Winnipeg pics get recycled online all the time, but he has a lot of originals.

Some nice photos!

I'm not used to seeing colour photos from back then. That's not too long ago I guess, the 50's. I always thought people in the old days walked really fast and everything was black and white. I jest.

Interesting look back to Winnipeg on 9/11, and in particular, the impact on the airport which received numerous diversions once North American airspace was shut down.

http://www.cjob.com/2016/09/11/159396/

I remember working downtown then with an office that faced west... I recall looking out my window mid-day and seeing plane after plane landing, one right after another for a while.
