I'm so proud the Bay Area has 2 cities in the top 60 list for murder rates: Oakland and Richmond (not the district of SF which is NOT on the list, the city in the East Bay north of Oakland and Berkeley).

I don't even drive across the Bay Bridge any more without the thought crossing my mind that I am in a high-murder zone because shootouts have occurred on the freeway I need to use (I-580]: 4 injured in shooting on I-580 in Oakland, eastbound lanes shut down, CHP says

SF is at 19 murders
Oakland is at 60, up from 33 at this time last year

The freeway is not a "high-murder zone." lol

People get shot on freeways in SF too, fyi. Here, you can be scared on both sides of the bay now:

Ohio actually ranks #27 in 2019. But I do agree that lots of Ohio cities get referenced in the CBS list. Still, there are lots of cities in Ohio! And, unlike sunbelt cities, most are old and are hemmed in by suburbs.
My home state of Minnesota looked pretty good in 2019. But like most places, the homicide rate has been much higher since 2020.

Someone like me who saves pockets for pepper spray, personal taser and switch blade (Swiss Army knives are for key chains). You sound like an urban resident who has never had a druggie throw a used needle at him or felt threatened by a group of obnoxious teens on the bus (or in COVID times, an unmasked patron at CVS). Only yesterday I had to remind an otherwise pleasant-appearing couple to step back to the distancing mark in the supermarket line and get the h*ll away from me (or I'd have to tase them).

I can just see it. Wearing a helmet and a bullet proof vest, a face shield on, 3 N-95 masks on, wrapped in plastic, wearing rubber gloves and in one hand pepper spray and the other Lysol spray with a personal taser and a switch blade within easy reach

BossaBreezes will squirm a bit but you have a slightly higher chance of getting murdered in Nashville than Portland. Even with the significant increases in Portland.

To early June there were 42 murders in Portland to 57 in Nashville. Their populations are similar with Portland at 646K and Nashville at 693K.

Using data over news headlines is a more logical way to determine how dangerous an area is. Don’t let emotions bias you.

Ah, man, that's just how the tourists think Americans dress.

That, and like this:

Portland has 49 homicides total (+3) since last week, two of which are murders, and one of which was a police-involved shooting of a methed-up maniac with a knife at a motel.

I am sure some of our more woke posters will appreciate this message but Antifa aren't involved in hardly any of these murders.

Though sure there are some pressures that have led to police being more (cough) emasculated that seem to have had an effect on murder rates in many US cities.

Here are a few stats for some East Coast cities. With the exception of maybe Philly, things seem to be settling down a bit. Boston and Cincinatti are actually down compared to this time in 2020.

Boston YTD: 19 Down 10%
Rate: 2.7 per 100K

New York YTD: 212 Up 12%
Rate: 2.5 per 100K

Washington DC YTD: 89 Up 13%
Rate: 12.9 per 100K

Chicago YTD: 326 Up 1%
Rate: 12 per 100K

Philadelphia YTD: 269 Up 36%
Rate: 17 per 100K

Cincinnati YTD: 37 Down 21%

Grew up in Boston and here for the summer.

No surprises about the Boston stats. This is one safe city with great urban bones, walkable and safe clean with normal people on transit who can go 15 minutes without a cigarette, without marijuana or being just plain old crappy, no convoys of motorcycles without mufflers 24/7, no 100 person fights in the streets of bar districts. From the moment I got on the Blue line from Logan airport, it was telling. Late night no worries, day time no worries either just like Chicago but the crap people in this city is so minimal you that nothing is of concern in perspective.

This thread continues to be both fascinating and rather morbid! There have been more murders in Chicago YTD than there have been in London (3x the population) over the past 2.5 years!

Now pair that with a mobility scooter or a walker, and it ends up looking like something out of Mad Max.
