I should clarify that they were offered good academic jobs in Winnipeg, which is the actual reason they ended up there. I meant "Artic" in a more metaphorical sense (as did they). They were originally enthused about the more natural and wilder possibilities of bracing Canadian winters. I haven't really spoken to them in a while, so I don't know how or if their views have changed.
By the way, they spent some vacation time in Montreal and loved it. One of them spent a half-year in Toronto working on a top secret project for the Canadian government and hated it. They also did two-year post-docs in Hamilton, and found it rather convivial, if not exciting. That's where I got to know them.
