Awesome, awesome

I like that they threw that 'holy grail' of canal st to s. claiborne. And I like the line to UNO and further down St. Claude. Encouraging that ridership is increasing significantly more than service increases.

1111 Tulane

City Biz permits show a $15 million permit being pulled for 1111 Tulane Ave. This is the building across the street from the oil and gas building. I tried to look back in the thread to see if anything had been posted and all i saw was a demo permit was filed back in Spring of 2012 and that a letter from the head of DDD Kurt Weigle mentions 1111 Tulane as apartments. Does anyone else have more details on this project?

New recycling initiative downtown- cigarette butts.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- In New Orleans, discarded butts are being turned into something useful.

The first of 50 cigarette butt recycling receptacles was installed at a downtown intersection Monday. Developers of the program say New Orleans is the first U.S. city to participate in a large-scale recycling effort launched in Canada last year.

Trenton, New Jersey- based recycling company TerraCycle Inc. developed the program in 2012. The first citywide receptacles were placed in Vancouver, British Columbia, in November 2013.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/orlean...185559035.html

And from the DDD:

. The receptacles will be easily identified with stickers that say "Recycle Your Butts Here." The DDD Clean Team will service the citywide cigarette butt collection units.

Always in favor of more trash cans. Cleaner, safer, more attractive streets make a better city.

On the theme of pie-in-the-sky redevelopment:

My favorite project is to tear down the Claiborne overpass. I just imagine what doing so could do, in terms of bridging the French Quarter with the rest of the city and creating a vibrant urban core. Is there any timeline on that? Any rumors? I fear the idea has died a quiet death.

It's not as pie in the sky as you might think. The study is in the Feds hands now but any tear down is a generation away. The Livable Claiborne Corridor Initiative is now focused on revitalization of the entire corridor with or without tear down. I should suspect there will be more on this areas redevelopment in the coming years.

I like this new NORTA plan. The last "master plan" we saw was just a bunch of CBD circulator routes like Loyola, but this new one provides routes that will actually be useful to city residents and expands the rail system to cover the whole city, even St Bernard.

The only problem is that the longer routes like Elysian Fields and St Claude will be crazy-slow trips from the end into the CBD unless NORTA reduces the number of stops. Tourism can sustain the snail-like St Charles line but dat slow lumberin trip ain't gonna lure the Chalmatians out dey cars.

Description

New 4 story multi-family development (1-level of off street parking at grade and 3 levels of residential above).

This is the lot with all the trees behind Rum House, former Artz Bagels (now Maple Street Patisserie). I thought and it functioned as a little park up until a few months ago when the elaborate decorative fence was closed in. Now it is slated for a seemingly large development. I love density and fight NIMBYS where I can, but I feel this might be pushing it. It really will be surrounded by all single family cottages. (Also, all those trees) It will be interesting to see how this plays out. They are in a Historic District, so everything will have to be approved.

Either way Magazine St. and the Irish Channel are on fire these days.

Why is this "pushing it"? Sounds like the building will provide plenty of off-street parking and it is adjacent to two large, blocky buildings (the Ninth Street Market and Live Oak Elementary). I don't really see what the impact will be. With careful setbacks, they can probably preserve half of those trees as well.

I really don't care what developers build on vacant land (or industrial sites, etc). I don't want to see a bunch of historic teardowns but that's not what's happening, and it wouldn't be allowed anyway (the NCDC exists to prevent this).

Checkout page 32 of the RTA presentation. Looks like this is a real plan.

City planners endorse new Deutsches Haus but not its design
"CITY PLANNERS: NEW BUILDING SHOULD BE ‘LESS GERMANIC-LOOKING’"

http://www.theneworleansadvocate.com...-new-deutsches

Is it just me or has the whole planning commission/process become a joke? This almost sounds like an article out of the Onion.

Especially ironic considering the design of the Greek Orthodox Church just a mile or so away.
