I think I prefer this hue Martin_Pal.

I didn't realize the rich history of the Holiday Bowl. Thanks for your research M_P.

Showing some pretty serious sun-shades. (I don't really like what's going on at the entrance with those straight flimsy poles)
I'm thinking they're just temporary for makeshift repairs.

...and today. (the entrance is actually improved)

Hey CBD, I enjoyed your post on Donn Beach. I'll have to try that drink recipe this holiday weekend.

While searching for a gruesome image of a suicide knob injury (I didn't find any)

I came across this interesting steering wheel feature.

I can honestly say I have never seen or heard of this steering wheel feature.

I'm not sure if we've seen this exact view on NLA.

Are we looking at the Whitley Heights area?

The signs on the Southern California Iron and Steel Building are all gone:

Other interesting stuff off to the left:

That entrance/exit ramp leads down to Mateo street

The area really hasn't changed that much since 1932.

Suicide Knobs

OK, so here is a guy who thinks that when Sammy Davis Jr. lost his eye in a car accident, it was because of the suicide knob.

http://message.snopes.com/showthread.php?t=10717

The story sounds a little iffy.

This page recounts the accident in graphic detail:

A suicide knob was not involved.

I suppose this wheel might work if you have only one hand or if your right hand is somehow disabled.

Just thinking of the possibilities.

From website:
Which States allow Steering Wheel Spinner Knobs?

Popularized in the 1950s, before power steering was widespread, steering wheel spinner knobs, the "suicide knob", or "Brodie knob" allowed people to steer their car quickly and more easily. The problem with this type of spinner is it can as easily unwind as wind, making it more dangerous to use. In some cases, though, where people have handicaps, it is the only way that they can steer their cars. For the most part though, unless you are handicapped, most states have outlawed spinners.

A steering wheel knob spinner is illegal in most states except in the case of handicap drivers. The laws and regulations vary by state, and even by county, so it is best to check with your local law enforcement office in regards to local laws. In the majority of cases, a person will have to get state approval before installing a steering knob.

Hmmm. Suicide knobs...one of those things I find I'm not as interested in as I thought... Don't think we've seen the gym of the Turn Verien Germania, once at 1345 S Figueroa...

What must have been one of the earliest houses in Brentwood... Assuming it did get built, does anyone have any idea where it might have been, or where it might still be?

I found and bought this today in an antique store in tiny Palouse, WA. Looks to me like he's standing in front of the old central division station at 1st & Hill. What do you think? Sure would like to know the story behind how this photo made its way up here.

Wow! That's an amazing photograph Greg_H. Can you read any part of the newspaper that's in his pocket?

Hm. Gaunlets, puttees, no badge, no uniform cap. Plainclothes motorcycle cop? You buzz by him and he pulls out that cool sign?

Cheers,

Earl

Unfortunately, even with a magnifying glass on the original, I can't make out more than Los Angeles. I don't know if that was the Times or the Herald. Maybe someone more familiar with the old mastheads can tell us.

There is a Parkyns St. in Brentwood. The homes are obscured by vegetation.

Here's another mini-mystery, the McDaniel's Midnight Market circa 1938.

Perhaps we've seen this open-air building before, but i don't recall this particular name....McDaniel's M M.

__

Not aware of any connection, other than name similarity.

McDaniel Motor Company had a Nash affiliation and was located at 819 Brand Ave. in Glendale. ('26) Location is still involved with auto sales. There appears to be a three service bay structure with a simple zigguarat-like exterior at the location. A nod towards the previous structure or happenstance?

206 N. Los Angeles Street - California Motor Cultivator Co.

Pretty sure these images have been seen before on NLA, but unable to locate.

1955 (But evidently at this location since the mid-'30s)

Lots of unusual features to see with this building. In the first photo we see soot above the windows on the upper floors indicate at sometime there may have been one heck of a fire in that building, as do the broken windows on those same floors. The upper photo appears to be much later than the second one in which we see no soot about the windows. The second picture appears to have been taken in the late 1940s. One might question as to whether the building was actually occupied at the time the upper photo was taken. There has to be at least a couple of news articles on this building.

In looking at the windows specifically for the portion of the building being occupied by California Cultivator I see another interesting fact that they were a dealer for the Gibson Tractor Company, which has a very interesting and short history unto itself as a maker of lawn/garden tractors. Gibson Tractor only existed as a business between 1948 and 1952, but yet today has a significant collector following.

Yes, that is Central Station and that is a Motor Cop of the "speed Squad in about 1913. He is in full uniform of the day by the way. I am unable to scan the photographs found in an Arcadia Publishing book titled Los Angeles Police Department by Hays and Sjoquist. A photo of the "Speed Squad" is on page 33 and a photo of the alcove of Central Station is on page 36.

The circular ceiling above the recessed balcony is especially interesting. Was this simply decorative?
It almost looks like it should revolve...like a lazy Susan.
