The borough leader said other major projects had also moved Queens forward in 2011, including Hunters Point South, where sanitary, storm sewers, curbs and sidewalks were installed in 2011 and substantial work completed on a 1,100-seat school.

Ground will be broken in September 2012 for the first 1,000 of an eventual 5,000 new housing units contained in the East River development.

I went jogging around Roosevelt Island last week and noticed that Queens West looks amazing from the south end of the island. I'm going to try to take my camera over their next time to get some photos.

this is very exciting...you can see in the crude red marking i've made the semi circular "canopy" that will shelter people from the sun

this park has taken a long time coming...it will replace the fantastic "water taxi beach" club that stood there for 5 seasons!

At Least One Huge Housing Development Is Still on Track: Hunters Point South Will Break Ground This Fall

By Matt Chaban
May 30, 2012

Quote:
Yesterday, The Journal (rightly) complained the lack of progress at two major affordable housing projects, Hudson Yards and Willets Point. This got The Observer wondering about another, though: whatever happened to Hunters Point South, which was approved the same day almost four years ago as the Willets Point project. Things are moving along quite nicely, it turns out.

It may seem as though there has been limited tangible progress since Related Companies was tapped to develop the project in February of last year, but that is because most of the work is being done below the surface—with on the banks of the East River and the banks of housing finance.

Since last spring, HPD and the city’s Economic Development Corporation have been at work on building new infrastructure in Hunters Point South, which had been a Daily News printing plant until a few decades ago but otherwise little else. “There was nothing there,” an HPD official told The Observer.

According to the EDC’s construction report for May, sanitary sewers are 100 percent complete, storm sewers are 96 percent complete and water mains are 82 percent complete. Parks infrastructure is coming along, as well, with subsurface work more than halfway finished and features like a dog run, playground, concession building and waterfront walkways taking shape.

Furthermore, the department has pegged financing to be wrapped up this fall for the first phase of the project—project financing usually closes in May and June, but given the cost and complexity of this deal, more time is being set aside to get it done. After that, a groundbreaking is scheduled for October.

Queens West Gets a School, Still Waiting for the Library

Wednesday, June 27, 2012, by Jessica Dailey

Quote:
It's been almost a year and a half since we checked in on the progress over at Queens West, but when a tipster sent along some photos of the new school and parkland, we decided it was high time for an update! So what's happening? Well, for starters, the School Construction Authority is making headway on the new I.S./H.S. 404 at 1-50 51st Avenue, which started going up in March. The 865-seat school will be ready for students by fall 2013, and at least three of the four additional residential towers are under construction by TF Cornerstone. The Queens West website says these will be complete by the end of 2013, but the site seems a bit outdated and lacking in information, so we have calls out to get more details on the progress.

What about the park and library?
Our tipster says that the northern most addition to Gantry State Park is not yet open, but it looks to be nearly complete. As for the Steven Holl-designed library, it's planned for parcel 8, which is currently undergoing an environmental remediation. At a February meeting, it was noted that construction on the library should be able to being in April or May of 2013.

This is the third building of the Power House Development. It's been planned as 3 buildings from the start (the original, sans smoke stacks, the second one, whose name escapes me, but is striped), and now this.

found this one....it gonna look great!!!!

.

this was the original Pennsylvania Railroad Power Station designed by McKim, Mead & White in 1909 in Long Island City....too bad it was butchered....

The Pennsylvania Railroad generating plant, later the Queens Electric Light & Power Company. This building was a 1909 to the famed architectural firm McKim, Mead, & White. It later became the Schwartz chemical plant; today is a luxury condominium (the building's smokestacks were removed as a consequence.)
