The building is located @ 245 North Fries Avenue in Wilmington.

...also that's another truck with non-pneumatic solid rubber wheels. (see what i learned this week. )

Yes..you could find trucks operating into the fifties with solid rubber tires..old tech but they could handle a lot of weight.

Just a guess here, but it seems like the "special event" could likely be a rodeo, considering that it was a stock yard. But I came up empty trying to find any references to rodeos at that location. It 's a shame the hexagon building couldn't have been saved. As a side note, I rode ProRodeo in upstate New York in the early 1990's (I was absolutely terrible at it!)

I found this reference on Google Books. It mentions the "Great Western Livestock Show and Rodeo" taking place in November ("nfd" = no fixed date). The book is called "Los Angeles in the 1930s: The WPA Guide to the City of Angels".

A bit about solid rubber tires from Kelly-Springfield

It's not L.A but it is considered one of the earliest examples of adaptive re-use of Industrial buildings in the United States, paving the way for many of the Buildings in the Los Angles area and across the Country to be saved.

Clock Tower Building, Built 1907. Also known as the Clock Tower Apartments. Located on the north side of Third St. between Grand and Adams St., it is well known because of the clock tower on the Grand Street corner. A residential apartment building that was converted from largest extant building that was once the Keuffel & Esser Companies complex for manufacturing drafting, architectural, surveying and engineering tools.

Redeveloped by Volt Information Sciences, Inc. starting May 1975. Dedication ceremony on October 27, 1976 when the clock was turned back on.

The Wilmington Transfer and Storage Co.'s building (now Bekins) seems to have had its shape determined by an old right-of-way.

Bekins also has the building with silvery, three-arched roof on Island Avenue. That one has been there since at least 1952 (according to Historic Aerials). The building in Trucker's picture is at the far left of the picture below.

The right-of-way isn't easy to follow on current aerials, but it goes right through the middle of the area in 1980, even though no rail tracks are visible. It looks like many of the current roads were just dirt tracks at the time.

I thought I remembered the Bekins building appearing in the 'CHiPs' episode 'Family Crisis' (S02E03), but this shot was the only one I could find (the Bekins building is on the left, above the green car). The white building on the right and the chimneys in the background have now gone.

Many of the buildings in this area have changed since the episode was filmed circa 1978. Other buildings survive, such as the J.M. Costello Supply Co.

If anyone's interested in seeing the area in 1978, I found the final chase scene from 'CHiPs' on YouTube. A stolen movie stunt car has been used to commit several robberies. The pursuit zig-zags south from West E Street to the docks.

Great stuff...I love the "caterpillar Tires" Back in the day trucks and trailers had either "SC" (solid commercial) or "PC" (pneumatic commercial) on their license plates..I guess they were taxed at different rates.
