A quick tour of some of New Orleans' great architecture.
"Is it safe...is it OK to visit New Orleans?" you may ask. Other than the humidity, there is absolutely no reason not to go now! The French Quarter and Garden District look as good, if not better than they have in the past. Although there are large sections of the city that haven't been restored, about the only thing the 'average Joe' tourist will see is a water mark on the sound barrier walls on the way from the airport. Although not a large contributer to their local economy it felt good to contribute my share to the recovery. Go now...do your part...you won't be sorry.
Downtown:
Trolly on Canal Street
Hibernia Bank building (?)
The Italian Pavilion built for the Worlds Fair
Harrah's Casino
Former Maison Blanche store, now Ritz Carlton
Along the river
Jax Brewery
The French Quarter
Jackson Square
Royal Street has some beautiful buildings and several galleries & antique shops
And a few cemetery shots...

Great pics of the most romantic and beguiling of all American cities - do you have any pics of the devastated areas? Are they safe to visit? (Long live Fats Domino!)
What a gem of a city! Incredible architecture, culturally diverse yet in need of help. Though beautiful and not dangerous in the tourist areas, the devastation is vast and the former residents are getting the run around from insurance companies with their efforts to rebuild. As Four O Four said above, go visit to help their economy.

Once on Bourbon Street with a Hurricane in your hand, its sometimes difficult to leave the area...I didn't get pictures of any of the devastated areas. The people I spoke with said its not safe to go alone since most of it is still abandoned. The Quarter and Garden District are fine but go with a tour to the other neighborhoods or cemeteries.
Thanks for the comments everyone!

For so many reasons, New Orleans is just its own unique place in our country. The only city with true cross-European architecture, and a melding of traditions and cultures. We have to protect it. That said, I'm gonna run over and have a Hurricane on Royal Street.

i went in may 2006; i was told to avoid them at night and if you saw a gathering of suspicious looking people, stay away, and that there were some gangs that had gone back to protect their "turf" even if it was abandoned. i didn't see many people out and about at all, a few real estate people and people rebuilding their houses, mainly it was eerily quiet.
