It's so hard for me to comprehend that view. It must be from Baldwin Hills area, but when you're down in the city you don't get the perspective of the mountains like that! Absolutely amazing.

Oh those Mountians bring back memories. Those things surrouneded where I grew up Unforgettable. I can see some of the power lines that clime the foothills near my old hood in this pic.

Amazing Pic.

Mt. Baldy, such an underappriciated Mountian.

Is there a major US city that has a more spectacular mountain range in the background than Los Angeles? With the San Gabriel Range towering behind it rising to a height of 10,064 feet (3,068 metres) at the peak of Mt. Baldy I think not.

^Well, Denver and Seattle have cases as well. That isn't to say Los Angeles' is inferior to the former.

^^Don't forget about Las Vegas, Portland, and Salt Lake City. All have impressive mountains.

You know, this pic is much better if you fix the color.....

Exactly, while this is a nice photo it obviously makes the mountains look much larger then they really are. From this view it seems that Mt. Baldy is close to downtown but it is really quite far away.

I know I don't live in LA but I have driven through on crystal clear Santa Ana days and the mountains look close and big but not at all like this. Hell this shot makes it look like Santiago with the giant Andes rising behind it!

Personally I would say that Salt Lake City has the best mountain backdrop of any major US city. The mountains look very tall and steep in SLC and they are very close to downtown.

SLC may have the backdrop but its skyline is tiny. L.A. has both the skyline and the backdrop.

From Downtown L.A., the mountains don't look imposing, but when you go eastward and especially towards Pasadena, they can become real imposing.

They look close and big because they are close and big. The San Gabriel Range starts at a couple hundred feet above sea level as opposed the the Wasatch at 4300 feet and almost achieve the same elevation. As far as being close... part of the range runs within the Los Angeles city limits.
