Hopefully guys Birmingham is just getting started. UAB, Innovation Depot, the CrossPlex, I-22, and our newly renovated Airport all have not hit there stride yet.

I took a stroll by the old Firestone Tire building today at lunch and noticed a date stenciled in green ink in several places on the building; "No Parking 8-3-14". Hopefully they will start demolishing that structure right after that date clearing the way for the Publix project.

Lovely...
I walked by the Highland Condo site this A.M. and noticed the mattress and the rest of the bedding was gone.

The construction fence is up on this property and I am waiting for the other shoe to drop across the street, that property has been roped off to stop the free parkers. I think the Publix will be a catalyst for more development on 20th Street South. The Spring Hill Suites by Marriott removed the large brown paper from the window of its vacant space facing 20th Street, hoping to attract interest.

Yeah, the Publix adds sort of a legitimacy to the area. While the big apartment complexes are nice, and larger investments they just don't seem as important separately as this one project does. I suspect that once it is up and running we will quickly lose track of all the smaller spaces being developed as there will be a rush to "fill in" the area around the supermarket to capture all the foot traffic that will be down there.

Birmingham Airport looks amazing. Hopefully we can get more domestic flights.

It will be interesting to see what type of business or businesses they will get to fill the other 40,000 square feet of space on the 19th street side of the Publix.

I wonder if they could put a 120-150 room hotel in the space between the terminal and the control tower?

Hey guys/girls,

As far as I'm concerned, the reconstruction of the airport is a triumph in and of itself.. If you're looking to impress people who aren't just casually traveling to/through (like road travelers) BHM - Shuttlesworth is turning out to be the perfect welcome.

I apologize for not being as attentive regarding this thread. I still have ongoing personal issues that keep me from spending long amounts of time on this forum, sadly.

Anyway, even things in Nashville and Atlanta take time to get started. We're still waiting on the transit hub (something that isn't just a wish). The Rotary Trail is under construction. Red Mountain Park is still developing (not just stop and go). The I-22/I-65/US 31 interchange is almost finished! These are JUST the core projects!

Things are hardly stagnant.

i think this being a skyscraper forum and all, though, most of us wish we could get at least ONE skyline-changing project like nashville and atlanta seem to be getting :/

I would rather see that space used for a future expansion /addition of a new concourse.

saw this tidbit on the "I Believe In Birmingham" Facebook group:

Bristol apartments presented their plan to the Forest Park/South Avondale association meeting tonight for the apartments on Clairmont across from Highland golf course. Bristol presented their design for the 246 unit apartment complex that utilizes the undulating landscape well, 5 stories on Piggly Wiggly side and 3 stories on the 36th street side (Forest Park). It has a flat roof so their are more apartments stories in the front and fewer stories in the back. It also has a central courtyard with a swimming pool. It will have a hidden parking deck with entrance from the back, 1 space for every bedroom. Bedrooms range from 1 to 3, 600 sqft to 1,300 sqft respectively. Average rent around $1,350. Construction will start in January and last 18 to 20 months.

The old Federal Reserve property has new owners, Harbert Corp. and Capstone. They are making plans but nothing has be revealed yet.

update on The Metropolitan (in Lakeview):

http://www.bizjournals.com/birmingha...-expanded.html

"Originally announced as a $40 million investment with 254 units over four stories, the project has since been expanded to include an additional story and 315 total apartment units..."

also, right across the street, Babalu Tacos and Tapas is about to open in the 29Seven building. nice little corner developing here.

unrelated: Trader Joe's is coming to the Summit. I've never been to one, but the news practically monopolized my facebook feed a few days ago, so I guess it's a big deal....
