I saw you liked my comment about hoping the Independent is over 700 feet tall on their FB page Kevin. I don't really want to read too much into the fact that they never replied back to it when they responded to the other two people. They probably simply don't want to hint at any specifics until the official release but at the same time it makes me wonder if it won't be.

I agree with you about the use of the term "iconic." However, I truly hope this is an iconic, non-conformist tower. AND, Austin's new tallest at over 750'.
Agree... needs to "lead" design". Forward thinking. That's how you fit in with Austin. "Fitting in" leads to more of the same.

Yeah, I asked when we might expect to see some renderings. I think they actually deleted my post because I haven't been able to find it.

I don't think they know how tall it will ultimately be. I'm on the Urbanspace email list and below is a snip from an email they sent out at the beginning of February.

I guess the height will depend on their pre-sales.

I walked by this area today and the lot is being used by Seaholm Residences for their construction trailers and some staging stuff. I would think the Independent could not start until Seaholm Residences is complete. Maybe they could demolish the building but I'd think Seaholm Residences would not want to move their offices and stuff, and likely have a land lease in place.

Austin Proper condo units are going on sale Fall 2015. Wonder if they'll try to beat it.

Going on sale Fall 2015 doesn't mean construction will start at that time, fwiw.

My implication was that they would need to have a more definite product to sell. That would mean renderings at the least, possibly defining a height. Proper is well defined now, even months before it is for sale. It's likely Proper will begin construction before the Independent.

And so as to not be a prognosticating leech, here's a photo of the site at bottom right. During the week the lot is packed with construction workers' vehicles.

You have a great vantage point for an Independent webcam.

If I'm not mistaken, it looks like they're already working on the art wall.

That photo also really shows how goofy 3rd street is there...those power lines really make things complicated, don't they?

isn't there some way for the city to bury those power lines? and please for the love of all things holy, expand 3rd street and put in another dang bridge. with the independent there it seems like they would have to.

Amen to burying power lines. They trash the scenery in so much of Austin, especially along Burnet and Lamar. At the very least, they should buried in the densely populated heart of the city.

The Independent developers may not want a 3rd St. bridge, in which case they could have some sway about that. Hmm... hard to say if it would be a better selling point to have the bridge there or to be on a dead end.

In some of the early site renders it showed 3rd street continuing, which suggests to me that they want it. I think it could work well either way - there's a pedestrian bridge already, so at least folks won't have to walk north or south to cross over the creek.

I'd also like to see them bury/tunnel/reroute the train track.
