I hope they send a few city crews to do cleanup of litter and a few street cleaners along the route tonight... walked a portion of it downtown and it was not looking very good in some areas.

Looking forward to catching some of this and taking part in the energy down in Churchill post race.

Once the race gets underway at 6:15 p.m., motorists leaving downtown will only be able to use southbound McDougall Hill, 103rd Street and 106th Street, but are advised to expect major delays.

Thirty-seven bus routes will detour around downtown and two shuttle buses inside the downtown road closures will take customers to southbound bus connections. The LRT will not be affected.

The following road closures will be in place:

—96th Avenue/100th Street (Rossdale), 2—8:30 p.m.

—107th Street, 3:30—9 p.m.

—Grierson Hill, 5:15—9 p.m.

—River Valley Road, 5:15—9 p.m.

—97th Street, 5:15—9 p.m.

—100th Street, 5:15—9 p.m.

—101st Street, 5:15—9 p.m.

—102nd Avenue/102A Avenue, 5:15—9 p.m.

—Walterdale Hill and Bridge, 6—8:30 p.m.

—99th Street south of 102nd Avenue, Noon — 9 p.m.

—99th Street, 102nd Avenue to City Hall Parkade closed August 31 — September 4.

Best moment of the pre-race so far: Rubby dub on an old 10 speed carrying about eight huge garbage bags full of empties rides through the finish gate with a smoke in his mouth, throws his arms in the air in celebration as he passes through the gate

Classic. Wish I'd gotten a photo

Amazing how many people I know are getting off early and the hell out of downtown right now.

I hope we see good crowds along the route and while I can appreciate and respect that this is not for everyone, the intent was to perhaps suggest why dont you stay downtown for a bit, grab a bite, check out a very neat event in your city and then head. Transit is in full operation and you can still exit south of downtown in vehicles on the james mac.

Yes, lots of folks booking out early from our buildings. From my vantage point above Churchill square it doesn't look as though there are many people here yet.. but it is still early. We're leaving to go have a beer at the Hilltop, then coming back down to the condo later to pick up some more stuff.. will walk over to the Leg to catch a bit of the race later on

DONT FORGET TO RECORD THE RACE***

We will be on the Square at start and finish and for the festivities. This is amazing and a great day given the Icelandair announcement. I hope they are watching the race in Reykjavik...and see what a great place our Edmonton is

I can watch from my place. Right now I can count on one hand the number of people on the route near the Low Level Bridge.

The turnout south of Low Level Bridge greatly improved after 6 PM...probably about 50 - 60 people. Me and some neighbors wandered down to watch for a bit.

Good turnout in Churchill square. And I love the start shoot.

Patio beers post

Tons of photos to come

Mack Male thinks there could have been more people:

I think there are more police in #yegdt than spectators. Guess that's what happens when you highlight street closures over the event itself.
I think 1st back to school day plus the fact that this was only a prologue race were bigger factors with attendance. Hopefully the race finishes alternate between Calgary and Edmonton.

I stayed dt after work and checked it out at Churchill sq.

Great to see lots of people, fun atmosphere, I was amazed at how many turned out to watch the hill climb at the Leg!

My only gripe was hearing the Canadian anthem in French at the Tour of Alberta. Maybe that's just me though

It was unfortunate how many people left early instead of grabbing a bite and enjoying a unique event, but around Churchill was excellent.

We enjoyed the Square events, hung out and at race time were at the fence near the start chute so watched the first 10 out and we meandered, headed to Grierson, stopped for dinner, drinks then walked up 102nd Ave to 107 St then back down Jasper. So got a good perspective. Our thoughts:

-crowds disappointing for Edmonton, we could and should have done better
-events at the Square while interesting were not enough to keep people
-no where to sit, relax unless at a VIP tent
-there was no public beer tent or tables and chairs to eat food from the food trucks
-too many people with bikes pushing through the square - it should not be allowed and please leave your dogs at home
-The rendition of O'Canada that started in French was 75% French...the last line was English - what the hell is with that??
-the whole layout needs some changes...the bike pit areas need more space, and food trucks moved out of the way to the opposite side of the Square - the priority is space and access for bikes

on the plus side:
-world class event with world class athletes - lets keep this one...
-good sponsorship from the Corporate community
-Volunteers amazing and there must have been well over a thousand

I guess I am thinking it should have been equal. It was not. I don't mind it started in French. That said, we did not care for her "style" of Oh Canada or her voice.

Why did they not have the race on the holiday Monday in the afternoon when more people would turn out?

To me a Tuesday after work race did not make sense
