Speaking of retail, what type of retail (including restaurants, lounges, pubs, etc) is 104 Street still missing? More clothing boutiques? Shoe stores? Specialty retail? I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

Retail, shoes and maybe a quick food place that is something unique.

I was walking up 106th past the old ALCB that then became A&B Sound and was eventually bought by NorQuest. I thought I had read that NQ will be selling that property once the new Tower is constructed. It crossed my mind it may be large enough for a small hardware store - esp. since it has a huge loading dock already in place. Anyone heard anything further on that?

I suspect Norquest will indeed divest this once the new building is up...perfect for hardware!

Probably more financial core than 104 St, but I really would like to see the return of a shoeshine service again, say in the pedway level of Manulife Place. I see these in the financial cores of other cities. I think the Board Room has had this service on and off, but I would like to see a classic setup with elevated leather chairs, newspaper and some old guy giving your shoes a buff & shine.

I wouldn't mind seeing another restaurant or two open on 104 St...perhaps one sit down type place and perhaps one fast food type place. Preferably non-chains. But other than that, I'd prefer 104th to develop its retail side more. Maybe an art gallery or two, pet food store perhaps, maybe a knick-knack shop a la Chicken Scratch, shoe store, or perhaps a record store (though I think Jasper Ave would be a better spot). Since the re-opening of Hub Cigar on Whyte Ave just happened, maybe they could open a second branch on 104th or perhaps another business could take the helm. I also think a couple more clothing stores would be a nice addition to the street. Maybe a streetwear type place, or a formal wear shop, or something like Who Cares. I wouldn't object to something like American Apparel opening up on 104th as a way to lure people to the street.

Maybe I'll start one if I win the lottery!

I forgot to mention that another reason why a shoe shine kiosk is needed in the financial core is because of the changing workforce demographics in the vicinity. I'm seeing more and more suits and ties in the core and less of the standard government worker bee outfit (Dockers and polo shirt), which means more dress shoes being worn.

There used to be a money's worth & best show repair and polish etc at Kingsway. I think that is a franchise. There is a shoe repair and polish now at city centre 2nd floor above Lux iirc

Yes. Surprised they haven't opened up here already (on 104th, Whyte, Jasper, 124th...)

^ Probably partly because Gravity Pope carries Fluevogs already, but I think they could easily do their own store downtown now.

Probably just me, but I can't fathom there being a market for that "look". Although my wardrobe is pretty blue collar. I don't know much about the hipster crowd other than my eyes instinctively roll when I catch a glimpse of said hipsters.
I'm not a hater, I just don't get it

I don't consider myself a hipster, but I like wearing interesting and stylish shoes. Makes up for my otherwise complete lack of style (blue jeans with a basic button-down or a t-shirt). They're damn comfy, and last for many years, too.

Not saying you're a hipster is about the most hipster thing you can say .
