what about islands within islands?

singapore is an island nation city with several islands.

sentosa is probably the most known -- and it has islands too.

Vladivistok built a bridge to Russky Island and seems to have placed a University there (after the grounds served to host a summit):

Seems to be a work in progress. Here's a nice view from a drone:

South Bend, Indiana has an island, created by the St. Joseph River and an industrial raceway that has since been repurposed as the first artificial white water course in North America. Not sure if it constitutes a full neighborhood, but it has a mix of uses - and it's seen a lot of development in the past few years that is not evidenced in this satellite view yet -

I've always wondered.. How does Vancouverland deal with the shifting of the fraser river? River deltas are perhaps the most difficult possible places to build cities..

I live in a prairie city with no river (just a creek) and no natural islands.

Lots of gorgeous cities in this thread with unique features. Makes me want to do a road trip through the States and go back to China.

Berlin has a few.

Most famous is Fischerinsel, named after an old fisherman's settlement that datedback to the 13th century. The northern end of the island is home to some of Berlin's museums, and therefore called Museum Island. The southern end--still called Fischerinsel--somehow survived WWII as an intact pre-industrial district, only to fall to the commies and their Platenbau in the '60s.

Alt Spandau is another: a medieval old city at the confluence of the Spree and Havel, an old miller's canal or something separates it from land.

https://www.google.com/maps/@52.5374.../data=!3m1!1e3

On the opposite side of the city, Alt Köpenick sits at the confluence of the Spree and Dahme rivers, and has its own moat to complete its insulation.

I guess you could argue that entire districts like Moabit and North Charlottenburg are islands, since they're surrounded by river and canal, but they don't feel like it.

There's also Eiswerder, just north of Alt Spandau, but I've never been there and it doesn't look super exciting.

Anyone visiting Tikal in Guatemala should spend at least a few days in Flores. It’s beautiful there.

Little diomede would literally be the worst place I could think of to live on. You’re mega isolated and it’s cold as hell most of the year.

I imagine it's worse on the other side of the border...

No, but Uelen doesn't seem any better...

(cruisemapper.com)

also, I think there used to be a population on Big Diomede that was forcibly removed by the USSR. I see a settlement here: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Bi...4d-169.0642957 although that's probably some sort of border post.

In second or third grade, I think I wrote/illustrated a sci-fi short story named "Marooned on Diomede" I bet my parents still have it somewhere...
