Interesting street lamps. I would never have guessed that Studio City had street lamps that looked like that. I wonder when these were first installed, and when they were removed.

It's also interesting to me to see old photos of Ventura Boulevard. Prior to the Ventura Freeway being built, Ventura Blvd. was US-101, but for some reason, in my own internet searches over the years, it seems to have been difficult for me to find old photos of Ventura Blvd. from the pre-WWII era or immediately post-WWII.

By the way, I'm really loving the sets of B of A photos, HossC.

I've just noticed I think one can just see the Fox Studio City Theater on the right margin in the shot above.

Opened in 1938, it closed in 1991. Clifford A. Balch was the architect.

The building is now a BookStar. The box office and auditorium are intact.

John Dolphin was a big to do out on Central ave. He not only owned his own record labels, but he had a successful record store called Dolphins of Hollywood. DOH had musicians drop in all of the time, not only because it was a cool spot to be seen at, but local disc jockeys such as Hunter Hancock and Dick "Huggy Boy" Hugg would broadcast the latest spins from the main window. Now like most record owners in the 50's John had a habit of not paying his artist..Unlike Don Robey of Peacock records (who would put his name on most of the records as co writer), John would simply buy the song..release the song , and then when an artist asked about royalties John would pull out his gun. But at least with John an artist had the opportunity to get exposed.

My Dad dealt with John not long before John died and he told me "He was a crook,but always supported talent".. So it wasn't a surprise when on Feb 1, 1958 an angry artist by the name of Percy Ivy killed John.

This is taken from a great article about the man....According to the L.A. Times, John Dolphin, 42 of 3918 Edgehill Dr. was murdered behind the desk of his office at 1252 S. Berendo St., Hollywood, on Feb 1, 1958 by frustrated singer Percy Ivy, 26, a shipping clerk who lived at 1124 W. 45th St. Teenaged songwriter and piano player Bruce Johnston witnessed the murder at Dolphin’s office in Hollywood. With him were musicians Dave Shostac, 16, of 10304 La Grange Ave. and drummer Sandy Nelson, both of whom were waiting with Ivy outside of Dolphin’s office for the man to arrive. “Ivy said he submitted four songs to Dolphin three or four weeks ago, but failed to collect a promised payment of $250 each.” One of the songs was “You’re Going Away.”

Ivy stated he “reached for the gun,” a 32-caliber Italian automatic, “when Dolphin pulled out a switch blade knife.” Ivy fired five or six shots at a close range. “Ivy let us in,” said Johnston. “He argued with Dolphin, then pulled out a gun and shot John, who landed on a heater. https://rockinsteve.wordpress.com/20...-john-dolphin/

Most of us are aware that the Toed Inn was in Santa Monica Canyon and that it was hit by the 1938 deluge. I believe there was at least one post of the storm damaged/muddy area around The Toed, but can't locate it presently. One thing I had forgotten was that the amphibian structure was relocated to 12008 Wilshire Blvd. A 1939-permit bears this out: "RELOCATED FROM LOT 156-155 TR 1719, 128 W CHANNEL ROAD TO LOT 10-1
1 TR 8038, 12008 WILSHIRE BLVD." It appears that there was more relocating and additions in '44 and new construction in '53, so it is currently unclear whether the structure was subsumed, eaten or moved elsewhere. There is no trace of it now, nor does there seem to have been any CD listings under Toed or Toad

Not in Santa Monica Canyon

This is the Toed Inn after it was moved out of Santa Monica Canyon -- it was in the great flood of 1938 and moved after that up toward Los Angeles proper on Wilshire Boulevard in Westwood. When they moved it, that's when it was enclosed. Here's a photo of how it looked when it was in its original location in the canyon; it was an open side stand.

Was Santa Monica was a stand in for Tennessee? There is a circa 1960 Kazan -Monty Cliff film, entitled "The Wild River." Although the film is in color, if memory serves me correctly, there are many black and white moving images of floods presented within the first two minutes of the film. Among them is a shot of the Toed Inn. First two-three minutes.

YES! At a 1:26. "Toed" is at the top of the frame. The version or format I recall seeing had the full structure.

The words "good moral character'' to carry a pistol of course means the exact opposite in the real world.

That's 6th Street where the car is in the middle of the road, so Lex's Lounge would've been in the building on the right. Here's a color shot of the building dated 1/16/55. Sadly, the demolition boards hide the first floor.

"At the southeast corner sits the former Hotel Valdemar, 606 South Hope Street. University Club of Los Angeles behind it at 614 South Hope Street."
