Thank you....
...As long as it's going at some kind of pace.

Maybe the reason is due to building atop an already-existing edifice and the precautions necessary to do so in a "duly diligent" manner.

Most likely once they get past the pre-existing section--which it certainly looks to me as if they've done--things should pick up.

Foster has really done a nice job with this one. I like the back of the tower especially, with those vertical lines and fins with nice lighting that will highlight it. He took an old 50's mid century modernist office block and turned it into a contemporary office tower with Foster's trade mark of exposing structural elements. He also added an art-deco twist too. Kind of a mix between an art-deco revival (crown) and a high-tech structural expressionist (body). I don't think the critiques like pastiches, but i do.

I think it would have taken them less time to tear down the old building and start anew.

Obviously they couldn't due to zoning requirements, but this is taking forever...

I've been chomping at the bit on this baby since Lord Foster's design first came out.

Now maybe we'll see a bit of action.

Did they forget that this is a tower and it's supposed to rise?

Yeah this has been taking a crazy long time. Still has ways to go. You'd almost forget this will be essentially 900 ft. Resembles a giant mall given the pace of construction or looks as of now. But, still moving faster than 19 Park Place ever did. Probably one of the slowest towers ever to rise, and its pencil thin and tiny.

Norman Foster-Designed 425 Park Avenue Begins To Rise, Midtown East

Quote:
The blocks of Hudson Yards are the current hotspot for office construction in New York City, with supertall after supertall rising from nothing. But Midtown East might be the only location in Manhattan where major office projects are rising alongside existing fabric. While One Vanderbilt is only beginning to rise above 42nd Street, work is substantially further along at 425 Park Avenue, where Norman Foster’s vision is now climbing past the stump remaining from the site’s former occupant.

Now that the concrete backbone at the site’s eastern edge has progressed past the original floors, steel appears to be following suit, and the building’s vertical profile is finally on the rise. Completion is anticipated by late 2018, though at the current pace, 2019 may be a better estimate.

That horrible Irish Bank building can't come down soon enough. That site screams for a 950' limestone Stern tower.

Yup. And that block has tons of air rights. Hopefully that building will be replaced soon.

Most of the work done so far was inside the building. New floors are being constructed and the progress should be more visible.

A limestone highrise there with a seven star hotel would be an utter blockbuster.

That would be fantastic. Park Ave. in Midtown, while nice, could be much better.

I agree.

Also, as I recall, the current owner of the Irish Bank building didn't even pay that much, so it's not like a Park Lane or 666 5th Ave scenario, wherein they need to sell at $5,000/sf to break even, though I think a Stern here would easily achieve those numbers.

This site is dramatically underutilized as Class B office space.
