LA Kings beat Sharks 5-1 in Game 7, make history by overcoming 0-3 series deficit

The Los Angeles Kings made history Wednesday night, becoming the fourth NHL team to come back from an 0-3 series deficit by beating the San Jose Sharks 5-1 in Game 7. They’ll now move on to face their other in-state rivals, the Anaheim Ducks, in Round 2.

The theater will be part of a 35,000-square-foot, fully digital training center that will serve as a research facility and teaching facility for students to learn Imax filmmaking as well as location-based entertainment and multi-player game design.

Even though the Luxe recently underwent a makeover to convert it from a Holiday Inn to something a bit more glamorous, it's likely the Chinese developer intends to tear it down and build a bigger and better hotel. That's sort of a relief, since the Luxe remains fortress-like and interacts poorly with Figueroa and LA Live. This new project will sit north of similar mega-developments like Fig Central and 1200 Fig.

The site Shenglong bought at the southwest corner of Grand Avenue and 12th Street is 44,412 square feet, he said, putting the price at roughly $585 per square foot.

Representatives of Shenglong Group could not be reached, but Tarczynski, who represented the sellers, said Shenglong intends to build twin condominium towers. A 1930s warehouse on the site would be razed to make room.

Other Chinese developers active downtown include Greenland USA, which is building the Metropolis hotel, condominium and retail complex north of L.A. Live, and Oceanwide Real Estate Group, which is building the Fig Central condo, hotel and shopping complex across Figueroa Street from Staples Center.

For a while, tech activity downtown skewed heavily toward e-commerce, a result of being so close to the fashion district and its manufacturing facilities. Provocative online-offline retailer Nasty Gal, style website DailyLook and luxury fashion start-up StyleSaint are just a few of the brands that bolstered downtown L.A.'s visibility as a viable tech community.

But the pool has gotten larger and more diverse, particularly in the last couple of years.

By one venture capital firm's count, there are now 78 tech-oriented firms in DTLA. They encompass mobile apps, hardware, digital media and clean-tech companies plus co-working spaces, start-up incubators and other related businesses.

Some are brand-new, with just a couple of employees; others have been around for several years, such as NationBuilder, a community organizing software platform that launched in 2011 and has grown to more than 160 employees.

With tech hiring so competitive these days, executives say one of downtown's biggest benefits is the ability to cast a wider net for potential employees.

Back in 2013, Angels Knoll—the very site where Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel so romantically shared a bench in (500) Days of Summer—was closed to the public, with the hope that a lack of people would expedite a sale of the property. As of late last year, nothing had happened: the City was hoping to purchase the site from the agency in charge of selling assets owned by the defunct community redevelopment agencies, but that meant coming up with $10 million it didn't have. Today, Downtown News reports that things are finally moving. The City will act as "the middleman for a sale to private developers," but the park is unlikely to reopen as the sale moves forward, and will probably stay a vacant, ugly space even as fancy nearby projects rise.

It comes down to money, as it so often does. The City is in the process of assessing the land right now; what was valued at "more than $10 million" last September is now looking to be "north of $20 million." After the value is determined, the site will go out to bid, hopefully by the end of the summer. The park could be reopened as these proceedings move along, but that would mean spending—something the City is hesitant to do, considering a sale is (hopefully?) imminent. A BID could also step in and bring the park back, but that, too, depends on resources. Local stakeholders are unlikely to spend money on a project like this, where any work they may put in would be ripped up by the eventual developers.

The first phase of the project would create a 30-story hotel, with 250 rooms, at the northwest corner of 11th and Flower streets, as well as a 30-story condominium tower at the northeast corner of 11th and Figueroa streets. A second phase would demolish the Luxe hotel and raise a 42- condominium tower. There would be 650 condos in total.

The development would also have 80,000 square feet of retail on two floors, with much of it fronting Figueroa Street.

The $700 million project represents Hazens’ first ground-up development in the United States. The company broke into local market with a purchase of the 802-room Sheraton hotel at Los Angeles International Airport in December 2013.
