It's been ages since I've been downtown in Windsor, at least in the blocks south of the waterfront. Always good to see better land uses in our city cores, though a bit more density would have been nice on that site.

Having more activity right downtown due to the presence of those new school buildings will be a great thing too.

Wow, it looks like this important historic building DT is finally getting renovated by the Federal government that neglected it for so many decades! Very good news indeed!

Jo-Anne Gignac has announced she's running for the federal conservatives in the same ward incumbant Joe CoMartin is retiring in. I think the timing is suspect and it's politically motivated, especially since it's the conservatives that are in power at the federal level and have let that building fall apart.

I am happy it's being done, but they shouldn't get any kudos for doing what any landlord, especially the government should have been doing long before, and that is maintaining the building. Instead they let it become an eyesore and a risk to public safety. Shame on the conservatives.

Finally some great news about Windsor's housing market. Windsor was the third best city for real estate investment returns in Canada in the past 5 years, beating out Toronto and Vancouver!

The good news is always completely overshadowed by the bad news.

Windsor, leading the country in unemployment and the number of people on employment insurance as per a recent CBC article.

I know, as always unfortunately, but at least it was because of the massive layoff of Chrysler workers during the retooling. I'm cautiously optimistic about our economy in the coming months.

Things are looking up for the Greater Windsor Area, finally! Big increases in labour force, participation rate and employment.

True, look at the massive increase in the number of people in the labour force in the past year. We have to look beyond just the unemployment rate. The housing market is on fire too.

New medical development planned for University W.

source: http://windsorite.ca/2015/07/new-med...-west-windsor/

Quote:
A new medical development is being planned for West Windsor.

Located in the former federal finance building at 1100 University Avenue West, the empty building will be renovated and will see two additional floors added to it.

Six physician partners have committed to developing the site and to relocating their practices to the building. Renovations have already begun and the group plans to open the facility in the spring of 2016.

Services will include family medicine, an urgent care clinic, diagnostic services, a pharmacy, physiotherapy and a lab.

Work has also been underway at the other end of the property on the former Butler warehouse. Plans for this building include a new Penalty Box Restaurant and other commercial and retail uses.

More information is expected to be released on the project Tuesday.

This is great to hear. I really hope it goes through, as University Ave. has so much potential, but has seen so little developement in recent decades. Good to hear the Penalty Box redevelopment is back on track too.

University W, and most of Wyandotte W are both wastelands. Vacant, empty, dirty unkept buildings. This project would be a big boost.

Yeah, both streets are pretty bad. I really like Wyandotte W. By the University though, where the new streetscaping was done. Looks great, no empty storefronts, a mini China town, and lots of foot traffic from the U.
The section by Crawford, on the other hand, looks the worst, lots of boarded up old buildings and crappy, busted streetscape.
I have hope for University Ave. and this private investment is a good sign. Plus, once the DT University campus is up and running, it should increase traffic between the core and the main campus, and hopefully add more private investment and interest in the area.
A smart redesign of the street would also help attract new investment. Haven't heard anything lately from the city about that either.

University Avenue will be undergoing a massive makeover within the next few years (the city has put aside $5M for it). They plan on adding boulevards, trees, streetscaping, bike routes, etc. The road is much too wide for the traffic it handles so there's a lot they can do with it...should be interesting.

It's funny the Windsor Star the other day was talking about how we don't have enough water fountains along the river, and of the ones that we have, only some work. It just always feels this city does everything half baked. We have lots of money for pools though I guess.

Didn't they just announce a renovation plan for the Paul Martin Building? Maybe they're moving out so someone else can move in.

Makes more sense for all the Canada Post employees to be under one roof anyway.

I doubt they have any plans to move any new workers into the building, but I could be wrong.
